PM Modi Highlights Surinamese-Hindustani Community in The Hague

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the Netherlands has brought significant attention to the Surinamese-Hindustani community, a notable success story of Indian heritage in Europe. As he prepared to engage in high-level discussions and address the Indian diaspora on Saturday morning, the community’s rich history and ongoing contributions were at the forefront.

The origins of the Surinamese-Hindustani diaspora date back to June 5, 1873, when the ship Lalla Rookh arrived in Paramaribo, Suriname, transporting indentured labourers from the Bhojpuri regions of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Bengal. This migration marked the beginning of a unique journey, which the British Viceroy of India described as “a new system of slavery,” yet it transformed into a remarkable account of resilience within the Indian diaspora.

Despite the adversities faced, the community has maintained its cultural identity for over 150 years. The descendants of those early migrants have preserved their heritage, with children and grandchildren still conversing in Sarnami, a lively creole developed on Suriname’s plantations. This language, which integrates elements of Bhojpuri, Awadhi, and Dutch, serves as a crucial link to the ancestry of the migrants.

Migration to the Netherlands and Cultural Resilience

After Suriname gained independence in 1975, many in the Surinamese-Hindustani community made a second significant journey to the Netherlands, arriving in search of new opportunities. These migrants brought with them a rich cultural tapestry, comprising Indian customs and Caribbean influences, symbolised through their dual connection to the past.

Currently, the community in the Netherlands is estimated at around 200,000, making it the largest and oldest Indian-origin group in continental Europe. This community, while distinct, remains closely linked to approximately 90,000 more recent migrants from India. Their cultural practices continue to thrive, with elements such as the Baithak Gana folk tradition evolving into the Sarnami-Bhojpuri Geet style, championed by Fifth-generation artist Raj Mohan.

Artistic expressions within the community have gained recognition, exemplified by Raj Mohan’s collaborations with notable Indian musicians, including Anup Jalota, thus bridging cultural gaps and showcasing their artistic heritage in the mainstream. This ongoing evolution signifies a strong cultural presence within the Dutch landscape.

Recognition and Contributions to Dutch Society

The contributions of the Surinamese-Hindustani community have not gone unnoticed, with several of its members receiving the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman, the highest honour for overseas Indians. Each award acknowledges individuals who have significantly contributed to preserving Indian traditions and fostering ties with India.

Among the honourees are Shri Ram Lakhina, who dedicated years to community service, and Shri Saleh Wahid, celebrated for promoting Indian interests in the Netherlands. Additionally, Satnarainsing Rabin Baldew Singh, a former Deputy Mayor of The Hague, is recognised for enhancing Indo-Dutch relations, while Mr Eugene Rhuggenaath, of Surinamese-Hindustani descent, rose to the rank of former Prime Minister of Curaçao.

As PM Modi prepares to address this vibrant gathering, which welcomed him with traditional performances like Kathak and Garba, the enduring bond between the Indian subcontinent and the Surinamese-Hindustani community is emphasised. This connection remains a testament to the notion that migration does not sever ties but rather fosters a continual sense of identity and cultural pride, spanning across generations.
