PM Modi Commends Kolkata for Outstanding Yoga Day Participation After Massive Turnout

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the remarkable public participation during the 12th International Day of Yoga held in Kolkata. Leading the national celebrations, he performed yoga asanas alongside thousands at Red Road, asserting that yoga serves as a powerful unifier, bridging communities together. This year’s theme, ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’, highlighted the significance of yoga in maintaining fitness throughout various life stages.

Modi expressed his appreciation via social media, noting the diverse participation at the event and emphasising how it reflects the essential role of yoga in daily life. He stated, “An exceptional Yoga Day programme was held at Kolkata’s Red Road this morning, demonstrating the vitality of yoga for individuals from all backgrounds.”

He further described the event as significant, underscoring how it delivered an important message regarding the benefits of yoga. This year’s theme aimed to stress the necessity of staying fit and healthy, regardless of age, through the practice of yoga.

Gratitude to Kolkata Residents and Cleanliness Initiatives

In another social media update, Modi conveyed his gratitude to the residents of Kolkata for their stellar hospitality during this year’s programme. He commended the city’s pre-event cleanliness drives, which he found inspiring, stating, “I would like to express gratitude to my sisters and brothers of Kolkata for being such outstanding hosts… The people of Kolkata have given a big message on performing the duties of a citizen.”

Modi shared moments from the event to illustrate yoga’s importance. Discussions on community engagement shone through the celebrations, amplifying the collective spirit of participation observed on this significant day.

This year, the International Day of Yoga was celebrated globally under the overarching theme aimed at promoting healthy living, emphasising yoga’s role in fostering an active lifestyle across different age groups.

During the mass yoga session, Modi articulated the connecting power of yoga, suggesting that it fosters a sense of community within both the nation and internationally. He extended heartfelt greetings to the global community, emphasising how yoga unites people. He stated, “Yoga connects everyone, brings everyone together,” thereby reinforcing the idea that it transcends boundaries.

The Prime Minister articulated that the theme of “Yoga for Healthy Ageing” signifies a collective ambition to enhance physical and mental wellness throughout the lifespan. He stated, “Our target must be to be more flexible at 40 than we were at 20”, stressing the importance of continuous growth through yoga practice.

In his speech, he encouraged individuals to embrace yoga not just for personal well-being but as a significant contribution to the future of humanity. He urged all to integrate yoga into their lives and families, ensuring its enduring presence for coming generations.

Further, Modi acknowledged West Bengal’s spiritual heritage, referencing Rabindranath Tagore’s philosophies, which align with yoga’s essence of interconnectedness. He highlighted that yoga exemplifies the principle of harmony, vital in today’s fast-paced society, offering a route to balance and reduced suffering.

On a broader scale, prominent figures, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, participated in yoga events across the country, showcasing a united front in promoting health and mental well-being. The celebration of the International Day of Yoga culminated as a collective movement, illustrating the widespread engagement encouraged by Modi’s initiative, initially proposed at the United Nations, which recognised 21 June as the International Day of Yoga in 2014, supported by numerous member states.
