Prime Minister Narendra Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome in Jakarta on Monday as he began his official engagements during a state visit to Indonesia aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding strategic cooperation.

Modi arrived in Indonesia on Monday on the first leg of a three-nation diplomatic tour that will also take him to Australia and New Zealand. His visit, being held from July 6 to 8 at the invitation of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, is expected to focus on defence, maritime security, trade, investment and critical minerals.

PM Modi Received By Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto

Modi’s aircraft was escorted by Indonesian Air Force fighter jets after entering the country’s airspace before landing in Indonesia.

President Prabowo personally received the Prime Minister at the airport, where Modi was also welcomed with a traditional cultural dance performance.

The current visit marks Modi’s fourth trip to Indonesia and the first bilateral visit between the two countries since India and Indonesia elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018.

Talks during the visit are expected to review the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and provide further momentum to cooperation under the strategic partnership.

Defence And Maritime Cooperation High On Bilateral Agenda

Defence and maritime security are expected to remain important areas of discussion between Modi and Prabowo as New Delhi and Jakarta seek to deepen cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

Security ties between the two countries have expanded in recent years through regular high-level exchanges, joint military exercises and cooperation between their defence industries.

Indonesia’s acquisition of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles has also emerged as a significant component of growing defence cooperation between the two countries.

India’s MAHASAGAR, or Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions, framework is expected to guide New Delhi’s efforts to promote security, stability and inclusive development across the maritime domain.

PM Modi Says Visit Will Strengthen Act East Policy And MAHASAGAR Vision

Ahead of his departure, Modi said his visits to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand would build on the momentum in India’s relations with the three countries and strengthen cooperation across strategic, economic and people-centric areas.

“My visit to Indonesia and Australia in the Eastern and Southern Indian Ocean, respectively, followed by New Zealand, will further strengthen India’s Act East Policy, MAHASAGAR Vision, as well as our outlook towards a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Modi said in his departure statement.

Following the completion of his engagements in Indonesia, the Prime Minister will travel to Australia and New Zealand as part of the three-nation tour.

PM Modi To Visit Prambanan Temple Complex

During his stay, Modi is scheduled to interact with members of the Indian diaspora in Indonesia.

Members of the Indian community have expressed optimism that the Prime Minister’s visit will create opportunities for greater cooperation in sectors including mining, infrastructure, energy and emerging technologies.

Modi will also accompany President Prabowo to the UNESCO-listed Prambanan Temple Complex in Yogyakarta.

The Prime Minister has previously described the historic temple complex as a visible symbol of the deep civilisational connections between India and Indonesia.

Bilateral Trade Reached USD 24.78 Billion In 2025-26

Indonesia is India’s second-largest trading partner within the ASEAN bloc, reflecting the expanding economic relationship between the two countries.

Bilateral trade reached USD 24.78 billion during the 2025-26 financial year, while more than 130 Indian companies maintain investments across various sectors of the Indonesian economy.

Discussions during Modi’s visit are also expected to focus on strengthening trade and investment channels and expanding economic cooperation between the two countries.

Critical Minerals Cooperation Expected To Feature In Talks

Cooperation in critical minerals is expected to be another important component of the bilateral discussions as India seeks to secure long-term supplies of resources required for manufacturing and the renewable energy transition.

Indonesia holds approximately 21 per cent of global nickel reserves and is also among the world’s major producers of bauxite, copper and tin.

The country’s extensive mineral resources make it an important potential partner for India’s efforts to strengthen supply chain security and meet its long-term clean energy requirements.

Modi’s visit is expected to focus on deepening institutional cooperation, strengthening trade and investment ties in the critical minerals sector and reviewing the broader Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Indonesia.
