Piyush Goyal Launches Bharat Taxi App in Mumbai to Benefit Drivers

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Bharat Taxi app was officially launched in Mumbai by Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on April 24. This initiative aims to reduce the reliance of auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers on foreign applications that charge substantial commissions and subscription fees. Goyal stated that the app will not only offer zero commission but also extend free insurance cover worth Rs 5 lakh and provide access to MUDRA loans for drivers.

Benefits for Drivers and Public

During the launch event, Goyal emphasised that the app would ensure affordable and authorised fares for the public while safeguarding the rights of drivers. He expressed his satisfaction that drivers could now escape the burdensome fees that have historically been imposed by overseas platforms. The introduction of Bharat Taxi is seen as a governmental step towards empowering drivers by enhancing their earnings through fair practices.

Goyal outlined additional features of the app, which includes offerings like free insurance for drivers and the chance to upgrade their vehicles, particularly moving towards electric options, to increase their income. Such provisions aim to modernise the fleet while enabling drivers to benefit from available financial assistance.

Moreover, Goyal connected with the ‘Sarathi’ brothers during the launch, referring to the initiative as a significant move towards ensuring that drivers receive due recognition for their work. He assured that the app would expand across Mumbai and Maharashtra, reaching every driver and enhancing their conditions.

Related Government Initiatives

Earlier in February, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah had also engaged with cab drivers participating in the Bharat Taxi app service, highlighting the cooperative nature of this ride-hailing platform. Shah’s remarks drew attention to the principle that profits should benefit those who work directly in the service rather than the platform owners.

The concept of Bharat Taxi was unveiled by Amit Shah on February 5, marking the launch of India’s first cooperative-based ride-hailing service. Shah clarified that the platform differs fundamentally from conventional ride-hailing services, which typically deduct a significant portion of earnings from drivers. He underscored the initiative’s commitment to addressing the concerns raised by drivers regarding high commission rates.

Through various interactions, both Goyal and Shah have reinforced the objective of creating an ecosystem where drivers are not only fairly compensated but are also recognised as vital contributors to the transportation industry. Such measures are expected to promote a more equitable environment for those working in this sector.

Future Prospects of Bharat Taxi

The Bharat Taxi app signifies a broader shift towards empowering drivers with tools and resources that enhance their operational capabilities. With the promised benefits, it hopes to create a sustainable model where drivers are the focus, ultimately leading to better service for consumers.

As the app takes root, it is projected to catalyse a shift in driver engagement and services across Mumbai and beyond. The government’s backing aims to bolster the taxi and auto-rickshaw sector while encouraging loyalty among drivers through meaningful incentives.

While the initial launch is limited to specific areas, official statements indicate plans for expansion in the future. The initiative has potential implications for the entire transportation ecosystem, promoting a structured approach to ride-hailing that is more financially rewarding for drivers.
