Phil Salt Set for RCB Return After Injury Layoff as Team Pushes for IPL 2026 Playoffs

The CSR Journal Magazine

Phil Salt, the opening batsman for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), is scheduled to return to India this week after being out of action for a month due to a finger injury. The injury occurred on April 18 during a match against the Delhi Capitals, where Salt injured his left hand while attempting to prevent a boundary. He has not participated in any matches since then and returned to his home country last month.

During Salt’s absence, RCB has successfully clinched a playoff spot in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. The team is on track to qualify for Qualifier 1, which is set to take place in Dharamsala next Tuesday. The team’s qualification remains contingent on the Net Run Rate of other teams in the tournament. As it stands, Salt’s participation in RCB’s last league match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad on Friday remains uncertain.

In the current IPL standings, RCB is leading with nine victories against four defeats from thirteen matches, accumulating a total of 18 points. Prior to his injury, Salt had participated in six matches throughout the season, where he recorded two half-centuries and a score of 46 runs in total.

RCB’s latest match in the IPL 2026 featured a win against Punjab Kings (PBKS), with RCB securing victory by 23 runs at Dharamsala. Batting first, RCB posted an imposing score of 222 runs for the loss of four wickets, buoyed by outstanding performances from Virat Kohli and Venkatesh Iyer. Kohli contributed 58 runs, marking his ninth IPL season with over 500 runs, while Iyer remained not out at 73 runs off 40 balls. Additional contributions came from Devdutt Padikkal, who scored 45 runs, and Tim David, who added 28 runs.

In response, Punjab Kings faced an initial collapse, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar taking two wickets for 38 runs in four overs, dismissing Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh early in the innings. Skipper Shreyas Iyer also fell victim to the RCB bowlers, leaving the team in a precarious position. Despite spirited batting efforts from Marcus Stoinis, Shashank Singh, and Suryansh Shedge, the RCB bowlers maintained their composure during the decisive death overs. Notably, Josh Hazlewood delivered an economical penultimate over, while Rasikh Salam Dar closed the match with two wickets, restricting PBKS to just nine runs in the final over.
