Parvathy Thiruvothu Calls for Justice After Animal Rescuer’s Death

The CSR Journal Magazine

Actor Parvathy Thiruvothu has raised concerns about the tragic death of animal rescuer Sunitha Smitha, who was allegedly murdered while resisting an attempted sexual assault by her employer in Bengaluru. Sunitha, a 47-year-old woman from Pathamkallu in Vadanappally, Thrissur, had moved to the city to work at a dog shelter. Reports indicate that Sunitha died on May 5 at Jubilee Mission Hospital in Thrissur after being on ventilator support due to critical injuries sustained during the incident.

Details Surrounding The Assault

The incident reportedly occurred on May 2 at a shelter in Sulibele, Bengaluru, where Sunitha had gone to work alongside two other women. Allegedly, when she rebuffed the shelter owner’s sexual advances and expressed her desire to return to Kerala, the situation escalated violently. Witnesses claimed that Sunitha’s employer, identified as Deepak Krishnan, attacked her, forcefully striking her head against a wall and an almirah. He is also alleged to have threatened the other women present with a knife when they attempted to intervene.

According to reports, Sunitha’s husband, Sinto, was alerted about the incident by one of the witnesses over the phone. Subsequently, a complaint was filed with the Vadanappally Police. The case gained attention after local police connected with their counterparts in Bengaluru. An audio recording has reportedly emerged, in which a speaker believed to be Deepak admits to assaulting Sunitha and mentions taking her to the hospital in an ambulance.

Authorities have confirmed that they had previously registered a case related to the incident, which is now being thoroughly investigated by the relevant police departments. Sunitha’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief from her family, friends, and animal welfare advocates.

Public Reaction and Advocacy

Parvathy also mentioned the profound impact Sunitha had on the lives of the animals she rescued, noting that she cared for 167 dogs. Her dedication to animal welfare was evident, as she had previously experienced numerous violent incidents during her rescue missions. The actor questioned the circumstances that led Sunitha to accept a job from her alleged murderer, showcasing the complexities faced by many in the animal rescue sector.

Additional commentary from Parvathy included her distress over societal safety for women, which she articulated through a video that moved many viewers. The incident has sparked discussions about gender-based violence and the obligations of society to protect vulnerable individuals.

Law Enforcement Response

The ongoing investigation has attracted the attention of local law enforcement agencies, who are under pressure to ensure that justice is served swiftly. The police are thorough in their approach, aiming to piece together the events leading to Sunitha’s fatal injuries. Deepak Krishnan’s alleged admissions and actions are being scrutinised, and prioritisation of victim support is also a focal point as the case unfolds.

As investigations continue, Sunitha’s family and the wider community await further updates, reflecting on her legacy and the urgent need for enhanced protection for those working in animal welfare.
