The Parliament complex served as a platform for a creative demonstration on July 31, as opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) performed a street theatre to critique the central government over several pressing issues, notably the alleged theft of donations intended for the Ram Mandir project. This unique approach was part of a broader strategy to hold the government accountable for various matters and galvanise public interest.

During the performance, Pappu Yadav, MP from Purnia, donned saffron robes and assumed the role of a temple priest. He carried an image of Lord Ram from Ayodhya while simulating a donation collection process. As part of the skit, several other opposition MPs acted as devotees, presenting offerings to the ‘priest’. The narrative took a provocative turn when Yadav’s character surreptitiously pocketed the donations instead of placing them in the designated collection box, illustrating the protest’s central theme.

This performance also served to highlight a demand for Union Home Minister Amit Shah to address recent police actions against protesting students, as opposition members rallied with slogans calling for accountability and urging Shah to participate in parliamentary proceedings.

Growing Allegations Surrounding Ram Mandir Donations

The opposition has consistently raised concerns regarding alleged misappropriation linked to the donations for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. These issues have been at the forefront of public discourse, prompting calls for transparency from the authorities involved. On July 27, the Uttar Pradesh government informed the Supreme Court that it had established a new Special Investigation Team (SIT) to explore these allegations with seriousness.

The SIT will be led by Inspector General of Police Kiran S and will include several high-ranking officials, such as a Deputy Inspector General, Superintendent of Police, and Additional Superintendent of Police. The Solicitor General of India, Tushar Mehta, verified these details during court proceedings, pointing to the government’s efforts to address the matter adequately.

The Supreme Court has directed the newly formed SIT to submit a report within two weeks and has mandated that a forensic auditor be involved in the investigation. This directive arose in light of the serious nature of the allegations concerning the potential embezzlement of trust funds. Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana, has emphasised the necessity for a thorough inquiry into these claims.

Parliamentary Proceedings Disrupted by Demonstrations

On the same day, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned due to the uproar resulting from the protest. The chaotic atmosphere was marked by slogans directed at the government and calls for accountability regarding various issues plaguing the administration. The demonstration underscored the growing dissatisfaction among opposition members regarding the government’s handling of not just the Ram Mandir donation issue, but other matters as well.

The intensity of the protest reflects the ongoing tensions in the Indian political landscape, where major issues are being scrutinised both inside and outside Parliament. The opposition’s use of theatrical elements aims to capture public attention and pressure the government for answers amidst the rising concerns over transparency in governance.

As the investigation continues, the results of the SIT’s inquiry and the government’s responses to these allegations remain pivotal points for forthcoming sessions in Parliament and the broader political dialogue across the country.
