Omar Abdullah Criticizes Mosque Closure During Eid, Questions Claims of Normalcy

The CSR Journal Magazine

Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, voiced significant concerns on Saturday regarding the blocking of Eid prayers at the historic Jamia Mosque in Srinagar. He described the situation as “regrettable” and challenged the administration led by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, which claims that conditions are normal in the Union territory. Abdullah noted that while Eid prayers were successfully held throughout Jammu and Kashmir, the prohibition of prayers at the Jamia Mosque raises questions about the state of security and public order in the region. He asked, “What kind of normalcy is it when permission is not granted for prayers at Srinagar’s largest mosque?”

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s House Arrest and Restrictions

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the chief cleric of Kashmir and a prominent figure at the Jamia Mosque, reported that he was placed under house arrest prior to Eid. He highlighted that the shrine was locked, sharing images on social media of the mosque under restrictions. Mirwaiz observed that the enforcement of such measures has persisted for seven consecutive years, turning what should be a day of celebration into a period of grief for many Muslims. He expressed irony at officials who restrict access to mosques while extending festive greetings to the community.

LG Sinha’s Eid Greetings Amid Controversy

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha was among the notable figures who extended Eid greetings to the public, emphasizing the festival’s spirit of sacrifice and joy. In a message, he expressed hopes that Eid would bring peace and prosperity to all. However, his statements were met with skepticism given the situation surrounding the mosque.

Continued Limitations on Religious Observances

Mirwaiz reported that, in addition to his house arrest, the authorities devised restrictive measures throughout the town, hampering mobility for residents. Since being released from house arrest in September 2023, following the revocation of Article 370, he has frequently encountered similar limitations, particularly with authorities detaining him ahead of key religious events. The J&K Police refrained from making comments regarding the restrictions but indicated that prayers in Srinagar proceeded without incident, urging communities to celebrate responsibly.

Festivities in Jammu Contrast with Srinagar Restrictions

In contrast to the constraints faced in Srinagar, the Eid celebrations in Jammu were characterized by enthusiasm and traditional customs. Large groups of people adorned in festive clothing gathered at various venues, with the principal congregation taking place at Eidgah where thousands participated in the Eid namaz. Rattan Lal Gupta, the Jammu chief of Omar Abdullah’s National Conference, attended the gathering and underscored the significance of communal harmony in the region. National Conference MLA Bashir Ahmad Veeri also expressed concerns about the impact of international conflicts on local hardships, praying for an end to the Iran conflict and advocating for peace and understanding within India.
