NGO Owner Riyaz Kazi Arrested in Maharashtra for Conversion Claims

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent arrest of an NGO owner, Riyaz Kazi, has emerged from Nagpur, Maharashtra, following a string of allegations involving forced religious conversions and molestation within his organisations. Kazi, who manages Fikar Foundation and Padhe Hum, Padhaye Hum, is accused of using these NGOs to exert pressure on women to convert to Islam, enforce Islamic dress codes, and compel adherence to specific religious practices.

Complaints from employees within the NGOs led to police action, wherein Mankapur Police detained Kazi. The police have indicated that multiple complainants include women who alleged coercive tactics were employed against them. Inspector Harish Kalsekar of Mankapur Police Station confirmed the arrest and stated that investigations into the allegations are underway.

Authorities are delving into the extent of Kazi’s activities, particularly the number of women who may have been subjected to coercion regarding religious conversion. The investigation is ongoing and aims to understand the full scope of alleged misconduct within the organisation.

Involvement of Anti-Terrorism Squad

Following the gravity of these allegations, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has taken an interest in the case. The ATS is not only focusing on the allegations of conversion and harassment but is also scrutinising the funding sources for Kazi’s NGOs. Investigators are looking into how the funds are utilised and whether they have been linked to any unlawful activities.

As part of the investigation, the authorities plan to identify the number of women who may have been pressured into conversion by Kazi. The ATS is also assessing the possibility of larger networks or patterns of coercion operating under the guise of NGO activities.

This case has ignited public interest and scrutiny, particularly in light of other similar incidents occurring in Maharashtra. Given the sensitive nature of the allegations against Kazi, the police are taking a thorough and careful approach in their investigation.

Context of Recent Events in Maharashtra

This recent case arises in the backdrop of another disturbing incident linked to a TCS-affiliated BPO in Nashik, which has already elicited severe public and governmental response. That case involved allegations of targeted harassment against female employees aged 18 to 25, highlighting broader concerns over workplace safety and religious coercion.

Nine First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered in the Nashik case, including one from a male employee who reported incidents of religious harassment and attempted conversions. Complainants have cited abusive references to Hindu deities, forced consumption of non-vegetarian food, and intense pressure to conform to certain religious practices.

The convergence of these incidents has led to heightened scrutiny of NGOs and BPOs in the region, with authorities prioritising the investigation into allegations of religious and sexual harassment within such organisations. Local officials are keen on ensuring that victims come forward and that justice is served in both cases.
