A passenger was taken into custody after he allegedly attempted to open the emergency exit of a Batik Air flight en route from Kuala Lumpur to Kochi. The incident occurred during the flight on 5 August 2026, according to reports from law enforcement. The accused was identified as Jamsheer Athanikkal, who was travelling on flight OD231 when the incident allegedly unfolded.

The police revealed that the attempted breach happened between 9.30 pm and 11.05 pm while the plane was still airborne. It is reported that Athanikkal not only sought to force the emergency exit open but also caused damage to the window panel, leading to significant concern among fellow passengers and crew members.

Cabin crew members intervened swiftly to control the situation, restraining Athanikkal to ensure the safety of everyone on board. The airline’s security team filed a complaint, which led to the police registering an FIR against the passenger upon landing at Kochi early on the following day.

Charges Filed Against the Passenger

Following the incident, Jamsheer Athanikkal was charged under multiple legal provisions. Specifically, he was booked under Section 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for criminal intimidation. Additionally, charges were pressed under Section 11A of the Aircraft Act for contravening safety regulations and Section 118(e) of the Kerala Police Act for actions that put public safety at risk.

Police emphasised that such behaviour endangers the lives of all aboard and undermines the overall safety of air travel. Athanikkal’s actions reportedly incited fear among passengers, culminating in a situation that required urgent intervention by the crew.

This incident highlights increasing concerns regarding in-flight safety and the behaviour of some passengers, prompting discussions on airline regulations and security measures. Authorities are likely to review the enforcement of safety protocols in light of recent events.

Emergency Landing of Air India Flight Following Altitude Loss

The apprehension surrounding mid-air incidents was heightened recently following a separate scare involving an Air India flight. On 1 August 2026, Air India flight AI2379, which was travelling from Phuket, Thailand, to Delhi, reportedly experienced a sudden loss of altitude during its cruise phase. The airline confirmed that the aircraft safely landed in Delhi.

This flight had a total of 137 passengers and eight crew members onboard. After the altitude disturbance, a number of individuals required medical attention, with 13 passengers and four crew members subsequently admitted to hospitals for treatment. The airline stated that its teams provided necessary support to those affected.

Air India expressed its commitment to passenger safety, stating that it had alerted the relevant regulatory authorities and was cooperating with an ongoing investigation into the incident. The aircraft involved, a seven-year-old Airbus, is reportedly under scrutiny as part of the inquiry process. The airline reassured the public that it prioritises the safety and wellbeing of its passengers and crew members.
