The flood situation in Assam has reached critical levels, according to Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. He stated that 47 fatalities have been confirmed due to the flooding, with several individuals still unaccounted for. The minister emphasised the seriousness of the circumstances and indicated that both the Central and State Governments are collaborating closely to assist those affected.

Sonowal expressed deep concern over the lives lost and highlighted the governmental efforts aimed at ensuring safety and delivering relief to flood victims. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are reportedly providing crucial support in this crisis, helping to alleviate the feelings of isolation among the affected populace.

The minister asserted that both levels of government are committed to offering comprehensive assistance during this challenging time for the residents of Assam.

Chief Minister Addresses Ongoing Crisis

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the situation during a press briefing, indicating that the death toll may rise as communication with many affected areas remains compromised. He confirmed that the current toll stands at 47 deceased and eight missing individuals but warned that these figures may increase as rescue efforts continue.

Sarma noted that regions particularly impacted include Charaideo and Sivasagar districts, where connectivity issues hinder accurate reporting on the situation. He remarked that the number of missing persons is likely to increase as communications are restored, thereby reflecting the true severity of the disaster.

A total of 77 revenue circles across Assam have been affected by the floods, according to government reports. In Charaideo, there have been 152 villages impacted, affecting 133,159 people, with 10 fatalities reported thus far; Sivasagar has faced similar challenges, with many villagers cut off from communication.

Government’s Relief Efforts Underway

According to CM Sarma, relief materials have been dispatched to all flood-stricken villages in Charaideo, but approximately 30 per cent of affected areas in Nazira, Sivasagar, remain inaccessible due to mud and debris. Rescue operations are ongoing, with the government aiming to reach as many people as possible.

The Chief Minister indicated that cabinet ministers are currently stationed in affected regions, with additional support planned as conditions allow. He emphasised the grim situation as flooding continues in various districts, with reports indicating excessive rainfall affecting agricultural and health sectors.

In terms of financial resources, Sarma shared that Assam has received Rs 4,000 crore from the 16th Finance Commission, with approximately Rs 800 crore currently available for flood relief. He stated that immediate expenditures for relief are not expected to exceed Rs 100-150 crore, although a comprehensive assessment of damage is planned to secure further funding.

Sarma also addressed the unusually high rainfall in recent days, noting that Nagaland recorded a staggering 493 per cent increase in precipitation. He referenced specific data revealing extreme rainfall across several districts, significantly surpassing normal levels during the period from July 18 to 20.

These developments underscore the urgent need for a united response to the ongoing crisis, as both state and central authorities work to mitigate the damage and support the people of Assam during this challenging time.
