National Award-Winning Tamil Director-Cinematographer Chezhiyan Passes Away at 57

R Chezhiyan, a national award-winning cinematographer, filmmaker, and author, passed away on July 10, 2026, in Chennai after battling a prolonged illness. He was 57 years old at the time of his death. Chezhiyan had been receiving treatment at a private hospital located in Taramani, Chennai, but succumbed despite the medical attention he was receiving.

Recognition in the Film Industry

Throughout his career, Chezhiyan established a strong reputation for his realistic visual style and compelling storytelling. His contributions to Tamil cinema were recognised widely, and many actors, fans, and peers from the film industry took to social media to express their condolences and share memories of his work.

Born in Sivagangai, Chezhiyan initially pursued an engineering degree but later ventured into the world of cinema, driven by his passion for photography. He started his film career as an assistant to renowned cinematographer PC Sreeram, leading to his debut as an independent cinematographer with the film Kalloori in 2007. Following this, he worked on multiple projects including Rettaisuzhi, Thenmerku Paruvakaatru, Magizhchi, Paradesi, and Joker.

His cinematography in director Bala’s Paradesi earned him the Best Cinematographer award at the London International Film Festival in 2013, further solidifying his status within the industry. As a director, he made a significant mark with his film To Let, which received the National Film Award and garnered acclaim at various international film festivals.

In addition to his filmmaking career, Chezhiyan was also a noted author. His book, Ulaga Cinema, has been well-received among film students and enthusiasts alike. In this work, he introduced readers to the intricacies of world cinema, showcasing his deep understanding of the medium.
