Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s arrival in Seychelles on Saturday commenced a three-day official visit aimed at bolstering maritime security cooperation between India and the island nation. During this visit, he presented the fast patrol vessel ‘Lespwar’ to the Seychelles Coast Guard, highlighting India’s commitment to supporting its maritime security framework. This donation reflects the growing strategic partnership between the two nations.

Modi’s schedule includes discussions with President Patrick Herminie, along with participation in Seychelles’ National Day golden jubilee celebrations as the distinguished Guest of Honour. Reports indicate that bilateral talks will encompass a review of various aspects of their relationship and dialogue on international and regional issues of common interest.

Before his departure from New Delhi, Modi referred to Seychelles as a vital maritime neighbour and a strategic ally in India’s ‘Vision MAHASAGAR’ initiative. This framework aims for mutual security and development across regions, reinforcing India’s dedication to the Global South.

Reception and Cultural Engagements During the Visit

Upon landing at Seychelles International Airport, Modi received a warm welcome from President Herminie and a delegation. He was honoured with a ceremonial Guard of Honour and experienced traditional dance performances, including one from Kutch. A sizable gathering of the Indian diaspora showed their support, waving flags and engaging briefly with the Prime Minister, who acknowledged their significant contributions to Seychelles’ development.

In a post on X, Modi extolled the deep ties and affection that the Indian community in Seychelles has for India. He recognised their role as a bridge connecting both nations and enriching their shared history, thus highlighting the importance of people-to-people links in promoting bilateral relations.

Modi’s visit also featured a ceremonial tree planting with President Herminie at the Seychelles National Botanical Garden, symbolising mutual efforts in environmental conservation. This activity underscores the countries’ commitment to biodiversity preservation and ecological balance.

Maritime Security Developments and Future Collaboration

The handover ceremony for the patrol vessel ‘Lespwar’ took place at the Seychelles Coast Guard Base in Victoria. Modi noted on X that this transfer represents a significant advancement in the India-Seychelles partnership focused on defence and maritime security. He emphasised that this initiative is part of India’s broader strategy to support the security priorities of Seychelles.

Along with the vessel, Modi also presented six ambulances, ten utility vehicles, and five laser radial boats, which India’s Ministry of External Affairs indicated would further aid Seychelles in its development efforts. The ministry’s communication reiterated the strong partnership ethos, underscoring the collaborative spirit between the two nations.

Modi, who last visited Seychelles in 2015, is also expected to address the National Assembly during this trip and engage with members of the Indian community. His remarks prior to departure emphasised mutual progress and security in the Indian Ocean region.

The President of Seychelles described Modi’s visit as a testament to the enduring friendship and diplomatic relations that have flourished since Seychelles’ independence in 1976. The two nations have continually expanded their cooperation across various sectors, encompassing maritime security, defence, health, education, and sustainable development. Overall, this visit reflects a strategic commitment to enhancing bilateral ties for mutual benefit.
