Ministry of Sports Keeps Confirms Ban on India-Pakistan Bilateral Sports Ties

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Sports Ministry of India has confirmed that its ban on bilateral sporting ties with Pakistan will remain in place. This announcement was made on Wednesday through an official circular directed to National Sports Federations, the Indian Olympic Association, and the Sports Authority of India. The statement clarifies the country’s stance regarding bilateral events while allowing Pakistani athletes to participate in multilateral competitions hosted in India.

In its communication, the ministry reiterated its commitment to adhering to the Olympic Charter and internationally recognised sporting guidelines as it prepares to host significant global events, such as the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympics. The circular specified that Indian teams would not be allowed to participate in events held in Pakistan, nor would Pakistani teams be permitted to compete in India.

The ministry stated, “In so far as bilateral sports events in each other’s country are concerned, Indian teams will not be participating in competitions in Pakistan. Nor will we permit Pakistani teams to play in India.” The approach aims to align India’s policy with international norms while protecting its athletes’ interests.

Continued Engagement In Multilateral Events

While the ban on bilateral sports relations is ongoing, the Indian Sports Ministry has made it clear that it will honour its international commitments, especially in the context of global and continental tournaments. This means that Indian athletes are allowed to compete in international events featuring teams from Pakistan, and conversely, Pakistani athletes may participate in events hosted in India.

The ministry highlighted that visa procedures for athletes, technical staff, and international sports officials will be simplified to enhance India’s appeal as a destination for hosting international events. The circular underlines the significance of maintaining a favourable atmosphere for sport, where competitive integrity is respected while facilitating international cooperation.

<h4“To position India as a preferred destination for hosting international sporting events, the visa process for sportspersons, team officials, technical personnel, and office-bearers of International Sports Governing Bodies shall be simplified,” it stated. This initiative aims to foster a supportive environment for international sports activities in the country.

Status Quo In Bilateral Sports Policy

The latest communication from the Sports Ministry effectively maintains the existing policy regarding sports relations with Pakistan. Consequently, there will be no bilateral series in sports such as cricket and hockey between India and Pakistan for the foreseeable future. The announcement serves to formally underline the government’s position on this matter.

This decision comes during a period when India is attempting to solidify its role as a host for major international sports events across various disciplines. By sustaining this policy, the ministry aims to streamlining its focus on high-stakes tournaments without the complications that may arise from bilateral disputes.

Additionally, the ministry noted that international sports administrators visiting India would continue to receive protocol support and official courtesies throughout their stay. Such measures are intended to promote an atmosphere conducive to sporting excellence while ensuring formal obligations are fulfilled in a professional manner.
