Microsoft Announces Major Developments at Build 2026

The CSR Journal Magazine

At Build 2026, Microsoft’s premier developer conference, CEO Satya Nadella asserted that the era of operating systems and conventional applications is coming to a close, with the future leaning towards AI agents. AI was the focal point of his keynote address, which saw a series of major announcements aimed at positioning Microsoft at the forefront of this emerging landscape. A host of innovations were revealed, but five key announcements emerged as pillars of Microsoft’s evolving strategy in artificial intelligence.

Project Solara: A New Platform for AI Devices

One of the standout announcements was Project Solara, a comprehensive chip-to-cloud platform built specifically for AI agents. Microsoft described Solara as a solution intended to simplify and reduce costs for businesses developing AI-enabled devices that can be tailored for a variety of industries and customer needs. A demonstration showcased two prototype devices: a wearable badge leveraging Qualcomm technology for hands-free interaction with AI agents, and a desk companion powered by MediaTek that serves as a consistent AI assistant, capable of managing the user’s workload and timetable.

This initiative envisions a future where AI agents are not confined to specific applications or devices. Instead, they can function across various settings seamlessly. The trials conducted during the event illustrated Microsoft’s vision for a more interconnected and adaptable AI ecosystem.

By focusing on creating AI applications, Microsoft aims to tackle the next challenge — ensuring that these systems are secure, scalable, and can operate fluidly across different platforms, systems, and the cloud.

Microsoft Scout and MAI-Thinking-1 Model

Another significant unveiling was Microsoft Scout, which the company identifies as its inaugural Autopilot agent for workplace environments. Leveraging open-source technology from OpenClaw and powered by Microsoft’s Work IQ context engine, Scout is engineered to work across Teams, Outlook, OneDrive, and SharePoint. It is designed to automatically assist users with everyday tasks without the need for constant input from the user, thereby enhancing productivity.

Scout can manage scheduling conflicts, maintain project tracking, prepare meeting summaries, and oversee routine office duties autonomously. Security features have also been integrated, with each AI agent assigned a unique Entra identity, providing organisations control over the permissions and actions of the agents.

Additionally, the event showcased MAI-Thinking-1, an advanced reasoning model consisting of 35 billion parameters, specifically designed for complex problem solving and code generation. This model was developed using enterprise-grade data, which Microsoft claims results in increased efficiency and lowered operational costs.

Surface RTX Spark Dev Box and Majorana 2 Chip

On the hardware side, Microsoft introduced the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a compact system powered by Nvidia’s latest silicon. Capable of delivering up to one petaflop of performance, this device is designed for AI model operations requiring significant computational resources. It can run models with as many as 120 billion parameters, facilitating demanding tasks like model fine-tuning and AI workflows without full reliance on cloud services.

Further, the event revealed the Majorana 2 quantum chip, which provides a significant leap in reliability over its predecessor. This new chip represents a step towards Microsoft’s goal of developing a scalable quantum computer by 2029. Alongside Majorana 2, Microsoft also announced the launch of Microsoft Discovery, an innovative platform designed to assist organisations in conducting research powered by AI, merging human expertise with AI capabilities for more effective discovery processes.

Companies such as BHP and GSK are already utilising Microsoft Discovery in their research efforts, aiming to enhance the speed and efficiency of data analysis in diverse fields.
