Meta’s AI Overhaul Hasn’t Gone Smoothly, Zuckerberg Tells Employees

The CSR Journal Magazine

Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has acknowledged that the company’s ambitious transition towards artificial intelligence has not gone entirely according to plan, admitting that mistakes were made during a sweeping reorganisation that affected thousands of employees.

According to an internal memo seen by Reuters, Zuckerberg told employees that more mistakes were likely as Meta continued adapting to the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

“Given the complexity of these changes, we’ve made mistakes and will almost certainly make more,” Zuckerberg wrote, while stressing that the company would continue working to provide stability during the transformation.

The comments come after one of Meta’s biggest organisational overhauls in recent years as the Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp parent seeks to position itself as an AI-first company.

Thousands Affected By AI-Driven Restructuring

In May, Meta laid off around 10 per cent of its global workforce, amounting to roughly 8,000 employees based on its headcount of nearly 78,000 workers at the end of March.

At the same time, about 7,000 employees were reassigned to AI-focused projects and workflows. Reports indicate that nearly one-fifth of the company’s workforce could ultimately be affected by the restructuring and role changes.

Zuckerberg has been investing heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure, talent and products, joining a growing list of technology companies reorganising operations around AI.

Meta has also been exploring the use of AI agents to perform tasks traditionally handled by employees, reflecting broader changes taking place across the technology industry.

No Further Company-Wide Layoffs Planned

Despite acknowledging challenges, Zuckerberg sought to reassure employees about job security.

According to the memo, Meta does not currently expect additional company-wide layoffs this year, although the chief executive cautioned that wider industry developments remain beyond the company’s control.

“I don’t want to overpromise because the world is changing in ways that are out of our control,” Zuckerberg said.

He added that Meta would continue trying to create opportunities for employees who had been reassigned to support AI systems and model training.

The restructuring strategy, he explained, was designed to maintain flexibility and allow the company to redeploy workers if changes did not unfold as expected.

Meta Plans Team-Building Push

Alongside the operational changes, Zuckerberg outlined measures aimed at boosting morale and strengthening collaboration among employees.

Meta plans to increase spending on team-building activities, including larger budgets for company offsite programmes and corporate events.

The company is also preparing a major hackathon scheduled for July, which is intended to encourage cross-team cooperation and accelerate the development of Meta’s latest AI models.

As competition intensifies among technology giants investing billions into artificial intelligence, Meta’s transformation highlights both the opportunities and the growing challenges companies face in reshaping their workforces for the AI era.

The latest remarks from Zuckerberg underscore that even some of the world’s largest technology companies are still navigating the uncertainties that come with the rapid shift towards artificial intelligence.
