Meta Employees Create Internal Radio Station Amid Mass Layoffs

The CSR Journal Magazine

Meta is currently experiencing a difficult period as it lays off approximately 8,000 employees, leading to heightened anxiety and uncertainty within the organisation. This wave of job cuts has reportedly created a gloomy atmosphere among workers, who are apprehensive about their job security. Some employees have taken creative measures to cope with these challenges, seeking solace in humour and music during this tumultuous time.

Innovative Response through Music

According to a report by the New York Times, one employee has leveraged the company’s artificial intelligence tools to establish an internal radio station. This station, named “520 FM,” streams AI-generated songs that reflect themes such as workplace anxiety, the layoffs, and the overall emotional state of employees. The name of the station alludes to the layoff date of May 20, and it was introduced via a post that mirrored the tone typically used in Meta’s human resources communications.

The internal message acknowledged the elevated anxiety among staff, describing the radio station as an “A.I.-native initiative” featuring “original curated anthems” across an array of musical genres. Employees have noted that this platform serves as a welcome distraction, allowing them to engage with the situation through shared experiences expressed in song.

The station features a variety of AI-generated tracks, including genres such as hip-hop, country, rock, and metal. Notable songs include “Meta Layoff,” which features lyrics commenting on the situation in a humorous light, and “Missing the People,” which expresses nostalgia for colleagues and the camaraderie shared in the office environment. Another track, “Big Beautiful Layoff,” begins with a line acknowledging the challenges of remote communication through a frozen Zoom call.

Restructuring and Job Reassignments

The layoffs at Meta are part of a larger restructuring effort aimed at aligning the organisation with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s vision of developing an “AI-first” company. This week, the company has cut around ten per cent of its workforce while reorganising various teams to focus on artificial intelligence initiatives. Reports suggest that alongside the job cuts, Meta is reallocating a significant number of employees into new AI-focused teams, thereby shifting the organisational structure to prioritise AI developments.

More than 7,000 employees are reportedly being reassigned internally, with some moving to projects centred on AI cloud infrastructure, while others are joining teams dedicated to developing internal AI agents. Earlier this year, the company also transitioned over 1,000 engineers to a data labelling division named Applied AI, marking a shift from voluntary to mandatory reassignments as the restructuring progressed.

Peter Hoose, Vice-President of Production Engineering at Meta, allegedly communicated to staff that the company’s infrastructure and product landscape are undergoing fundamental changes due to the accelerated pace of AI advancements. The restructuring has also impacted management roles, with some managers losing their teams and being reallocated to positions that concentrate more on individual contributions rather than Leadership. This phase of transformation signifies Meta’s ambitious commitment to redefining its operational approach amid challenging circumstances.
