Meerut Horror: Dalit Mother Murdered, Daughter Kidnapped in UP; Police Launch Manhunt

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 50-year-old Dalit woman was brutally murdered while trying to protect her daughter from alleged abductors in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district, triggering widespread outrage and political reactions. The incident took place on Thursday in Kapsad village when the woman and her 20-year-old daughter were walking towards their agricultural fields.

Police said two men intercepted the pair near a canal and began misbehaving with the younger woman. When the mother intervened, one of the accused allegedly struck her on the head with a sharp-edged sugarcane sickle. The attackers then fled the scene with the daughter.

Victim Succumbs, Accused on the Run

Villagers rushed the injured woman to a nearby hospital after hearing her cries, but she succumbed to her injuries during treatment. Before her death, she reportedly gave a statement naming one of the accused and describing the assault. A videographed postmortem was conducted before the body was handed over to the family.

Police have identified the accused as Paras Som (23) and Sunil Kumar (25), both residents of the same village. An FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for murder and abduction, along with provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Massive Police Search and Security Clamp

Meerut SSP Vipin Tada said over 10 police teams have been deployed to track down the accused and recover the abducted woman. Search operations are underway across multiple districts, including parts of Haryana and Delhi. Heavy police deployment remains in Kapsad village to prevent further unrest.

Meerut Zone ADG Bhanu Bhaskar assured the family that all efforts are being made to bring the perpetrators to justice and safely recover the missing daughter.

Protests, Compensation, and Political Reactions

Following the woman’s death, protests erupted in the village, with activists and Bhim Army members demanding immediate arrests. The family initially refused to conduct the last rites, citing safety concerns and seeking strict action against the accused. After prolonged negotiations with senior officials, the cremation was carried out on Friday evening.

The Chief Minister’s Office has provided Rs 10 lakh in ex-gratia relief, with an additional Rs 12 lakh promised upon filing of the chargesheet. Authorities are also considering issuing an arms license to the family due to security concerns.

BSP chief Mayawati Reacts

The incident has sparked sharp political reactions. BSP chief Mayawati called the crime “tragic and shameful,” while Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav accused the state government of shielding criminals, claiming public trust was eroding rapidly.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati termed the episode “tragic, shameful and deeply concerning”. “The government must take these incidents of violation of women’s dignity and subsequent murder with utmost seriousness and take immediate and strict action against the culprits to prevent criminal elements from committing such heinous acts in the future,” she wrote on X.
