A 28-year-old man, identified as Rajesh and a resident of a village in Budaun, Uttar Pradesh, reportedly died after his health declined while in police custody. His family claims that the cops subjected him to mistreatment, which the police have denied, attributing his death to cardiac arrest. The incident occurred following a disturbance at a community feast held at a temple on Thursday evening, where a dispute broke out between two groups.

Following the altercation, police detained several individuals for questioning, including Rajesh. Another person involved, who sustained a head injury, was transferred to a hospital for treatment. On Friday afternoon, Rajesh allegedly went to the toilet at around 4 pm and collapsed shortly after returning. He was immediately taken to a hospital, where he was referred to the Budaun district hospital, where the doctors later declared him dead.

Family Allegations and Responses

Rajesh’s family has expressed doubts regarding the circumstances surrounding his death. His brother, Viresh, stated that Rajesh had been held at the police station overnight following the incident and claimed he died there. “The police brought my brother to the police station and kept him there the whole night. He died at the police station itself,” he said.

A relative of Rajesh remarked on their last encounter with him, asserting that he was in good health at the time. “We had met him about ten minutes earlier. He was fine and had eaten samosas. Suddenly, he collapsed,” the relative noted. Additionally, Rajesh’s wife expressed her disbelief, mentioning that he appeared well when taken by the police and noted that the family was not informed about his condition during his time at the station.

Security footage from the police station reportedly shows Rajesh lying on the floor before sitting up and walking toward the toilet. After he returned, he collapsed again, prompting police personnel to rush to his aid.

Official Investigations and Findings

Budaun’s Senior Superintendent of Police, Ankita Sharma, provided details on the actions of law enforcement on the evening of the altercation. She stated that both groups were brought to the police station due to a conflict regarding loud music during the village temple festivities.

While one individual landed in hospital due to significant injuries, police booked Rajesh for disturbing the peace. A panel of doctors conducted a post-mortem examination and confirmed that cardiac arrest was the cause of death. Subsequent investigations revealed no visible injury marks on Rajesh’s body.

The Senior Superintendent of Police also mentioned that a review of the CCTV footage from the police station showed no evidence of assault or torture occurring prior to his collapse. SSP Sharma assured that a competent officer would oversee the investigation into the incident. He also affirmed that he would take stringent measures against any individual found guilty of wrongdoing in connection with Rajesh’s death.
