The Municipal Corporation of Delhi carried out 25 demolition actions across the capital’s 12 zones on Friday as it intensified enforcement against dangerous structures, unauthorised construction and violations of building regulations, officials said.

The civic body’s latest drive comes amid heightened inspections following the September 6 building collapse in Satya Niketan, which killed seven people. Along with the demolitions, the MCD sealed four properties, issued six show-cause notices and passed four demolition orders on Friday.

Enforcement Action Across Delhi’s 12 Zones

Demolition drives were conducted in several parts of the city, including Satya Niketan in the South Zone, Vasant Kunj in the South West Zone, Burari in the North Zone and Shalimar Bagh in the Keshavpuram Zone.

Action was also taken in Krishna Park in the Central Zone, Rajan Babu Road in Adarsh Nagar and Chandu Nagar in Nehru Vihar, officials said.

In the Old Delhi Zone, the MCD carried out targeted demolition work at a property in Delhi Gate Bazaar in Daryaganj. With assistance from personnel of the Daryaganj police station, two roof panels on the fifth floor of the building were demolished, according to officials.

The civic body also continued the controlled demolition of a structure adjoining the building that collapsed in Satya Niketan.

Demolition Drive Intensified After Building Collapse

The MCD has stepped up inspections and enforcement since the Satya Niketan building collapse on September 6, in which seven people were killed.

A day before Friday’s drive, the civic body carried out demolition action against 41 properties across Delhi and sealed 61 others as part of the intensified crackdown.

Between September 7 and September 11, the MCD conducted 136 demolition actions against unauthorised constructions and other violations across the capital.

The enforcement drive began with seven demolition actions on September 7, followed by 17 on September 8. The number rose to 46 on September 9 before 41 actions were carried out on September 10. Friday accounted for a further 25 demolition actions.

From June 1 to September 11, the MCD carried out a total of 1,119 demolition actions against unauthorised construction, dangerous buildings and other violations of building regulations.

The cumulative figure stood at 1,053 until September 9, before increasing by 41 on September 10 and another 25 on September 11.

Survey Identifies Dangerous PG Buildings

Alongside its enforcement drive, the MCD has continued a citywide survey of buildings operating as paying guest accommodation.

The civic body has so far identified 1,523 operational PG buildings across Delhi, housing around 33,500 occupants.

According to MCD data, surveys conducted until September 10 covered 1,355 PG buildings and identified three structures as “visibly dangerous”. The three buildings were housing a total of 69 students and young professionals.

Officials said the survey findings were being consolidated and that further legal and regulatory action would be taken against PG establishments found to be violating safety requirements or other applicable rules.

The MCD said enforcement would continue across all 12 zones against buildings found to be dangerous or in violation of the Master Plan of Delhi and building bye-laws, as the civic body steps up scrutiny of structures across the capital following the Satya Niketan tragedy.
