Polio-Afflicted Mitanin Dedicated to Eradicating Viral Disease for 20 Years

The CSR Journal Magazine

A Mitanin in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, has been persistently visiting homes for two decades to ensure children receive the polio vaccine. Rupa Sahu, who herself is affected by polio, feels a strong sense of purpose in her mission. Her dedication stems from her desire to prevent others from experiencing the suffering she has endured throughout her life.

Since becoming a Mitanin in 2006, Sahu has administered polio vaccinations to over five thousand children. She personally visits families if any child misses a vaccination camp, demonstrating her commitment to ensuring that every child is immunised. In instances where parents may be hesitant about vaccinations, she uses her lived experiences to encourage them to protect their children.

Rupa Sahu recalls the challenges she faced during her childhood due to polio. She has translated her personal struggles into a mission to mitigate similar pains for future generations. Each vaccination session reminds her of her own adversities, further fuelling her desire to make a difference in the lives of others.

Overcoming Challenges in Service Delivery

According to Block Coordinator Sheelu Sahu, despite her physical limitations, Rupa effectively manages her household tasks and executes her duties as a Mitanin with diligence. Initially, her ability to contribute was questioned, but she has continually proven her capability to fulfil her responsibilities. From home visits to leading various health initiatives, her work is marked by a strong sense of accountability.

She is actively involved in health campaigns, including the Pulse Polio initiative, maternal care, and health surveys. Her passion is fuelled by a singular vision: to ensure that no child in her community falls victim to polio. Local residents, such as Sevati Sahu, highlight her role in promoting child and maternal health, stating that Rupa also offers advice on dietary habits and general wellness.

Rupa’s efforts extend beyond vaccinations, as she also engages with pregnant women in the community. Once she learns of a potential new mother in the area, Rupa travels using her tricycle to provide guidance on nutrition and prenatal care. This reflects her commitment to comprehensive healthcare for children and mothers alike.

Support from Community and Fellow Mitanins

Mitanin Devki Sahu, who has worked alongside Rupa for nearly twenty years, expresses admiration for her dedication. Despite occasionally facing skepticism from the community regarding her disability, Rupa’s unwavering commitment to her duties is commendable. Devki emphasises that Rupa’s mantra is simple yet profound: she wishes for no child to endure the same pain she has faced.

The support from her fellow Mitanins and the local community plays a significant role in the sustainability of her initiatives. Together, they work towards the shared goal of public health and the eradication of preventable diseases like polio. Their collective actions highlight the strength and resilience found within community-led health initiatives.

Rupa Sahu’s two-decade-long commitment serves as an inspiring example of how personal experiences can transform into a driving force for community welfare. Her work continues to impact many lives, reinforcing the importance of vaccination and overall health in the region.
