Mamata Banerjee Alleges Voter Manipulation by BJP Ahead of 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has formally addressed the Chief Election Commissioner regarding perceived attempts to undermine democratic processes in the state. In her communication, Banerjee alleges that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is instigating a plot to influence the electoral rolls ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. She claims that BJP representatives have been discovered submitting numerous fraudulent Form 6 applications at the Chief Electoral Officer’s office, with the intent of incorporating non-residents into the voter lists.

Claims of Irregularities in Voter Applications

Banerjee detailed her concerns in a post on X, stating, “I have raised a critical alarm regarding a serious conspiracy targeting the democratic rights of the people of Bengal. BJP agents are reportedly flooding the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer with thousands of fraudulent applications to facilitate voter hijacking, mirroring tactics previously employed in Maharashtra and Delhi.” The Chief Minister criticized the delayed processing of genuine voter applications, adding, “While over 60 lakh authentic voter registrations remain unresolved, the Election Commission of India appears to be hastily managing these questionable bulk applications without transparency.”

Demand for Immediate Action from Election Commission

In her letter, Banerjee called upon the Election Commission of India to take immediate action against what she termed as an “undemocratic exercise.” She emphasized the need to adhere strictly to the orders from the Supreme Court and to ensure that no inauthentic voters are added to the rolls after the final electoral list was published on February 28, 2026. “Bengal will not permit its democracy to be compromised. The citizens are attentive to these developments,” she stated.

Concerns Over Voter Inclusion Practices

The Chief Minister underscored the gravity of the situation, indicating that the applications being submitted do not reflect standard requests for voter registration but rather a deliberate scheme to include individuals who are not true residents of Bengal. Banerjee’s letter alluded to potential parallels with reported irregularities in other states like Bihar, Haryana, Maharashtra, and Delhi during previous elections. She expressed apprehension that these submissions may be linked to people lacking any legitimate association with West Bengal.

Call for Transparency and Protection of Voting Rights

According to the letter, if these allegations hold true, they would constitute illegal and unconstitutional actions, reflecting wrongful intent. Banerjee asserted, “This behavior does not align with the expectations for a constitutional authority. The public deserves transparency and protection concerning their voting rights.”

Previous Accusations Against BJP

Prior to this communication, Banerjee had openly criticized the BJP during a public event in Purulia, claiming the party’s rise to power could result in societal unrest. She insisted that under BJP leadership, public access to non-vegetarian food could be restricted. Such allegations mark a continuation of the political tension as West Bengal gears up for the Assembly elections slated for 2026.
