Maharashtra Police Implement Traffic Restrictions Prohibiting Goods Vehicles on Mumbai-Pune Expressway’s Missing Link Starting November 1

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Maharashtra traffic police have announced that all goods-carrying vehicles will be prohibited from using the Missing Link on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway starting from November 1. This decision follows revised traffic regulations issued on October 26, which rescind the previous allowance for light goods vehicles to access this new route. As a result, all goods vehicles must continue to utilise the existing expressway alignment.

The new regulations are set to remain in effect until further notice. The authorities have cited concerns related to traffic safety within the tunnels of the Missing Link, as well as technical considerations and discussions with stakeholders, as the rationale behind this decision. According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Khalapur, Vishal Nehul, the aim is to mitigate potential traffic jams and accidents that could arise from the presence of goods-carrying vehicles on this stretch.

Prohibition of Hazardous Materials

In addition to the ban on goods vehicles, the notification explicitly prohibits vehicles transporting hazardous materials, such as flammable, explosive, and other dangerous substances, from using the new alignment. These vehicles will be required to continue along the existing expressway route to ensure safety and compliance with the new traffic regulations.

The revised traffic rules specify that only non-transport light motor vehicles and approved passenger vehicles, including buses, will be permitted to use the Missing Link. This measure aims to streamline traffic flow and enhance safety for all road users. The restrictions are seen as essential for maintaining order and preventing incidents within the tunnels of the Missing Link.

Under the new regulations, cars and other permitted light motor vehicles will have a maximum speed limit of 100 kmph. In contrast, passenger buses and other approved passenger vehicles will be restricted to a speed of 80 kmph. The rules also allow for a 5 per cent tolerance in detected speed when addressing violations under Section 183 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

Improving Connectivity and Safety

The Missing Link was developed to enhance connectivity along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, featuring a new alignment that includes tunnels and various engineering structures. The latest notification aims to clarify the categories of vehicles allowed on this route and the applicable speed limits. Authorities believe that these measures will significantly improve safety and reduce congestion in the area.

Officials have emphasised that the restrictions are necessary to ensure the safety of all road users, particularly within the tunnels. The decision to implement these changes reflects a commitment to maintaining a safe and efficient traffic environment on one of the region’s busiest expressways. The Missing Link represents a crucial development in improving travel times and connectivity between Mumbai and Pune.

As the implementation date approaches, motorists are advised to remain informed about the new regulations and to plan their journeys accordingly. The Maharashtra traffic police will be monitoring compliance with the new rules to ensure that safety is prioritised on the Missing Link and the surrounding roadways.
