Shadab Khan and Haris Rauf Rescue Pakistan With Record 89-Run Stand

The CSR Journal Magazine

Shadab Khan, the all-rounder for Pakistan, shared insights about his conversation with teammate Haris Rauf during their crucial partnership that led to a thrilling one-wicket victory against England. Following the match held in Lahore on Sunday, Shadab indicated that their discussions extended beyond cricket. He stated, “He was explaining things to me more than I was explaining things to him. He was saying things along the way that I don’t think we can reveal on live TV.” This light-hearted exchange contributed to their enjoyment during the tense moments of the game.

The partnership proved pivotal, as Pakistan, chasing a target of 242, found themselves in a precarious position at 154-9. Shadab and Rauf collaborated effectively, turning the match around and securing victory for their team.

Record-Breaking Final Wicket Partnership

Shadab Khan played a standout role, finishing with an unbeaten score of 113, while Rauf contributed with seven runs off 19 balls. Together, they forged a remarkable partnership of 89 runs for the last wicket, setting a record for the highest partnership for the final wicket in a successful ODI run chase. Shadab’s aggressive batting included 13 fours and five sixes, which was instrumental in the team’s comeback after a challenging start.

Despite being given out lbw when Pakistan needed 21 runs to win, Shadab successfully reviewed the decision, revealing an inside edge that allowed him to continue his innings. Reflecting on their collaboration, he acknowledged Rauf’s significant contribution, stating, “I think Haris deserves more credit than me because tailenders at that position are always keen to hit sixes.”

Shadab emphasised the importance of teamwork in their successful partnership, highlighting how they guided each other through the challenging situation. His confidence grew as he believed they could achieve the target despite being in a dire position.

Pakistan’s Bowling Performance and England’s Struggles

Earlier in the match, England was dismissed for 241 runs in 46.4 overs, with Ben Duckett scoring a solid 105. Pakistan’s bowling attack was spearheaded by Shaheen Shah Afridi, who claimed four wickets for 46 runs. Afridi made an immediate impact by dismissing Tom Banton in the first over and Joe Root shortly thereafter, leaving England struggling at 52-4.

Duckett and Sam Curran attempted to stabilise the innings, forming a 93-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Curran contributed 42 runs before becoming Afridi’s third wicket. Jamie Overton helped England surpass the 200-run mark, while Gus Atkinson remained not out on 36. Pakistan’s bowlers managed to restrict England effectively, setting the stage for a challenging chase.

Pakistan’s innings began poorly, with both Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam dismissed for 10 runs each. Saad Baig’s quick 32 off 22 balls and Salman Ali Agha’s 26 were not enough to prevent further wickets from falling. Shadab entered the crease with Pakistan at 103-6 in the 24th over, and his unbeaten century ultimately turned the tide in favour of the hosts, securing their place in the tri-series final.

This victory marked England’s third consecutive loss in the tri-series, following a previous defeat where Sri Lanka chased down 430 runs with one ball remaining, achieving the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history.
