Mumbai Local Train Services Restored After Nearly 10-Hour Disruption

The CSR Journal Magazine

Mumbai’s local train services were reinstated across all four suburban railway lines at Kanjurmarg on Monday morning after a significant disruption lasting almost 10 hours. The incident was triggered by a fire that broke out in the signalling and telecommunications relay room at Kanjurmarg station around 9:33 am, leading to a complete failure of signals between Vikhroli and Bhandup. A Central Railway official confirmed the details, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Swapnil Nila stated that immediate restoration efforts were initiated to resume normal train operations. He noted, “A fire incident occurred this morning in the S&T relay room at Kanjurmarg station, due to which all signals between Vikhroli and Bhandup went blank.” The restoration of signals on the up through line towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus has been completed, while work on the remaining lines continues.

In addition to the signalling issues, an overhead wire problem was reported between Mulund and Thane stations at around 9 am. This issue was resolved by approximately 10:40 am, allowing operations in that section to return to normal. The railway authorities are committed to restoring all systems promptly to ensure a smooth experience for passengers.

Delays and Cautious Operations Implemented

Following the initial technical failure, train services were operated at cautious speeds under special authority, which resulted in delays and bunching across the suburban network. Central Railway indicated that trains were initially managed using A-board signals at Kanjurmarg and between Vikhroli and Bhandup. To manage the situation, absolute block working was implemented on the Vikhroli–Bhandup section, and train movements were regulated under TD 912 authority.

Technical teams from the railway were mobilised to restore the signalling system as quickly as possible, aiming to minimise disruption for commuters. The railway’s efforts focused on ensuring that services could resume without further complications. Passengers were advised to remain patient during this period of operational challenges.

Central Railway officials expressed their commitment to restoring services and ensuring smooth operations for all passengers. The inconvenience caused by the disruption was acknowledged, and the railway organisation is taking steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Continued Efforts for Smooth Operations

As train services were gradually restored, Central Railway reiterated its dedication to providing reliable and efficient transportation for commuters. The organisation is actively working to ensure that all systems are fully operational, allowing for a seamless travel experience. The restoration of services is a priority, and officials are closely monitoring the situation to address any further issues that may arise.

In the aftermath of the incident, Central Railway has also emphasised the importance of safety and reliability in its operations. Regular maintenance and checks will be conducted to prevent future disruptions and to enhance the overall efficiency of the railway network.

Passengers are encouraged to stay informed about train schedules and any potential delays as services normalise. The railway authorities are committed to keeping the public updated on developments and ensuring that local train services operate smoothly in the coming days.
