The CSR Journal Magazine

West Bengal is set to experience heavy rainfall as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for several districts from October 28 to 30. The alerts are in response to the impending impact of Cyclone Arnab, which is expected to make landfall near Andhra Pradesh on October 28. The cyclone is projected to bring extremely heavy rainfall to various regions, including West Bengal.

A yellow alert has been declared for several districts in West Bengal on October 28. Areas such as Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram, Purba Medinipur, South 24 Parganas, Birbhum, Paschim Bardhaman, Hooghly, and Nadia are included in this alert. On October 29, the IMD has extended the yellow alert to all districts across the state, indicating widespread rainfall. By October 30, the alert will shift to parts of North Bengal, affecting districts like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Purba Bardhaman, Nadia, Cooch Behar, Malda, Uttar Dinajpur, and Birbhum.

Impact on Odisha and Other States

The landfall of Cyclone Arnab is expected to cause severe weather conditions in Odisha, particularly in its southern regions. On October 28, an orange alert has been issued for districts including Malkangiri, Koraput, Gajapati, and Ganjam, while a yellow alert is in place for Nabaranhapur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Khordha, Nayagarh, Puri, Mayurbhanj, Kendujhar, and Cuttack, among others.

On October 29, a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall has been issued for Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam. An orange alert will apply to Nabaranhapur, Kalahandi, Nuapara, Balangir, Kandhamal, Khordha, Nayagarh, and Puri, while other areas will remain under a yellow alert. By October 30, the intensity of rainfall is expected to decrease, with only Sundargarh remaining on orange alert.

Manorama Mohanty, the Director of the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, has indicated that isolated extremely heavy rainfall and wind speeds of 50 to 60 kmph, with gusts up to 70 kmph, are anticipated in southern Odisha districts. She noted that the cyclone’s path is likely to bring significant rainfall, particularly in hilly areas, raising concerns about potential landslides.

Forecast for Andhra Pradesh

In Andhra Pradesh, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected in North Andhra and Central Coastal districts on October 27 and 28. Areas such as Kakinada, Anakapalli, Visakhapatnam, Konaseema, and East Godavari are likely to experience strong winds and heavy rainfall. Officials have indicated that the intensity of rainfall will peak on these dates.

The IMD has provided updates regarding Cyclone Arnab, stating that it has intensified from a deep depression into a cyclonic storm over the east-central and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal. The cyclone is expected to move west-northwestwards and further intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by the evening of October 26, and into a very severe cyclonic storm by October 27.

The weather department has predicted that Cyclone Arnab will cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam as a very severe cyclonic storm by the morning of October 28, 2023. Preparations are underway in various states to mitigate the potential impacts of this weather system.
