Tesla India Achieves First Profit with Rs 5.16 Crore Net Income in FY26

The CSR Journal Magazine

Tesla India Motors and Energy has announced a net profit of Rs 5.16 crore for the financial year 2026, marking its first profitable year since entering the Indian market in 2025. This financial milestone follows a significant increase in vehicle sales, which have become a crucial part of the company’s revenue stream. The total revenue reported for FY26 stands at Rs 247.31 crore, with vehicle sales contributing approximately 87 per cent of this figure.

The growth in revenue is notable, as it reflects a nearly twelvefold increase from Rs 20.83 crore in FY25. In FY25, the company’s revenue was exclusively derived from services, making FY26 the first year where vehicle sales played a pivotal role in its financial results. The transition to vehicle sales indicates a strategic shift in Tesla’s operations in India.

In terms of vehicle sales, Tesla began its journey in India by launching the Model Y after opening its first showroom in Mumbai in July 2025. The sales performance in FY26 has been primarily driven by this model, which has helped establish Tesla’s presence in the competitive Indian market.

Vehicle Sales and Registrations

During FY26, vehicle sales generated Rs 214.69 crore, while services accounted for Rs 32.40 crore of the total revenue. Data from Vahan indicates that Tesla registered 346 vehicles between September 2025 and March 2026, with a notable increase to 650 registrations in the subsequent six months of FY27. This surge in registrations suggests a growing interest in Tesla’s offerings within the Indian market.

The average monthly registrations have more than doubled, rising from around 49 to 108. Although this increase signifies a positive trend in sales activity, it is essential to note that these figures originate from a relatively small initial base, indicating that there is still significant room for growth.

Currently, Tesla offers two variants of the Model Y in India: the five-seat Model Y, starting at Rs 50.89 lakh, and the three-row, six-seat Model Y L, priced from Rs 61.99 lakh. The claimed ranges for these models are up to 500 km and 681 km, respectively, which are competitive in the electric vehicle segment.

Investment and Operational Costs

In FY26, Tesla invested Rs 86 crore into its Indian operations, primarily through a contribution from Tesla International BV. This investment reflects the company’s commitment to expanding its footprint in India. Cash expenditures on property, plant, and equipment increased significantly, rising to Rs 62.54 crore from just Rs 1.16 crore the previous year.

At the end of March 2026, Tesla’s cash and cash equivalents reached Rs 87.82 crore, a substantial rise from Rs 10.28 crore in the previous year. However, the expansion has also led to increased operational costs. Employee benefit expenses surged to Rs 43.67 crore, up from Rs 13.46 crore, which includes Rs 11.99 crore attributed to share-based compensation. Additionally, rent expenses climbed to Rs 30.32 crore from Rs 2.64 crore, while advertising and promotion costs totalled Rs 2.16 crore.

The total expenses for Tesla India were reported at Rs 240 crore, highlighting the financial pressures associated with scaling operations in a new market.

Future Prospects for Tesla in India

While Tesla’s FY26 results indicate a profitable year with the introduction of vehicle sales, it remains to be seen whether this trend can be sustained as the company continues to expand its operations. The increase in vehicle registrations during the first half of FY27 suggests a positive trajectory, yet Tesla must focus on building sales volumes to solidify its position in India’s electric vehicle market.

Currently, Tesla operates experience centres in several major cities, including Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, along with approved body shops in Pune and Ahmedabad. These facilities are integral to enhancing customer engagement and supporting the brand’s growth in India.
