Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated the international conference titled ‘Mahakal: The Master of Time’ on February 1, 2025. The event took place at the Planetarium Complex in Ujjain. The leaders also opened the Ujjain Science Centre and laid the foundation stone for several development projects, including the “Samrat Vikramaditya: The Heritage” initiative and the four-lane Ujjain Bypass. These efforts are part of the preparations for the upcoming Simhastha-2028 festival.

During the inauguration, CM Yadav highlighted Ujjain’s dual role as a centre of spirituality and science. He emphasised the city’s historical significance in mathematics and astronomy, noting its legacy in time calculation techniques. Ujjain has been recognised as a location where ancient methods for measuring time, such as shadow-based techniques, originated.

According to CM Yadav, Ujjain’s geographical position, located on the Tropic of Cancer, historically positioned it as a central point on Earth. He remarked that, in scientific terms, time governs the universe, yet Lord Shiva represents the infinite nature of time, which is symbolised by the title “Mahakal.” This connection between spirituality and science underlines the city’s importance.

Development Plans for Ujjain

The Chief Minister elaborated on Ujjain’s development plans, expressing pride in the establishment of the science centre, which has an investment exceeding Rs 15 crore. He acknowledged the continuous support from the central government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aimed at revitalising the scientific heritage of the region. The development of Ujjain as a Science City is intended to enhance its identity globally.

CM Yadav further emphasised the significance of the upcoming Simhastha 2028 festival as an opportunity to elevate Ujjain’s status on an international platform. The objective is to ensure that visitors not only seek spiritual benefits from the Mahakal darshan but also gain an understanding of the scientific value associated with the historical centre of time calculation.

Plans are in place to integrate science education and cultural heritage into the experience for devotees. The government aims to make Ujjain a symbol of knowledge, showcasing its historical contributions to science and mathematics. These initiatives are expected to attract a wider audience, bridging ancient wisdom with modern scientific understanding.

Contribution to Education and Community

The Ujjain Science Centre is projected to serve as an educational facility, promoting scientific literacy among the local community and visitors. By offering exhibitions and educational programs, the centre aims to enhance public engagement with science and inspire future generations. It is envisioned as a space where historical insights and contemporary scientific advancements converge.

Officials have indicated that the establishment of the science centre aligns with broader educational goals within the state. The initiative seeks to foster innovation and inspire interest in scientific fields, contributing to a well-informed society. The collaboration between local and national authorities underscores a commitment to advancing education and community development in Ujjain.

Through these efforts, Ujjain is positioned not only as a spiritual destination but also as an emerging hub for scientific exploration and education. The local government strongly believes that promoting this dual identity will significantly enhance the overall experience for both the residents and the multitude of visitors drawn to the city.
