Indian Women’s Team Aims to Establish Dominance in World Cricket

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indian women’s cricket head coach Amol Muzumdar has articulated a clear ambition for the team, aiming to solidify their status as a leading force in global cricket. Following a period of significant achievements, Muzumdar believes it is time for the team to take the next step towards dominance. He emphasises that while winning major tournaments is essential, the focus should also be on consistent performance across all formats.

Muzumdar, who has closely observed the evolution of Indian cricket, asserts that the current squad possesses both the talent and the mindset necessary to realise this goal. He has consistently highlighted the importance of preparation and discipline, urging his players to approach each match with the same determination, regardless of the opponent or format.

During an event organised by the Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai (SJAM), Muzumdar stated, “Two years down the line, if they start dominating world cricket… dominance is something that we have always spoken about within the squad.” He added, “Being ruthless on the ground is another thing that we have always maintained,” showcasing his commitment to fostering a competitive spirit within the team.

Big Changes Under Muzumdar’s Leadership

Amol Muzumdar took over as head coach of the Indian women’s cricket team on October 25, 2023, following Hrishikesh Kanitkar’s tenure. His appointment came at a crucial time, coinciding with the team’s preparations for two major ICC tournaments scheduled over the next two years. Since his arrival, the team has experienced notable success across various formats.

A pivotal moment in Muzumdar’s coaching career occurred on November 2, 2025, when India triumphed over South Africa by 52 runs in the World Cup final held in Navi Mumbai. This victory was preceded by a historic semi-final performance, where India successfully chased down 339 runs against Australia, marking the highest successful run chase in women’s ODI cricket at that time.

Despite these achievements, Muzumdar is determined to ensure that the World Cup victory does not represent the pinnacle of the team’s journey. He aims to cultivate a squad capable of consistently challenging and defeating top teams worldwide, rather than relying solely on sporadic moments of brilliance or isolated tournament successes.

Upcoming Challenges for the Team

India’s recent performances indicate a shift towards this ambitious approach. The team completed a clean sweep in their latest assignment, winning all six matches in both the three-match T20I and ODI series against Zimbabwe. This success reflects the effectiveness of Muzumdar’s strategies and the players’ commitment to the team’s goals.

However, the challenges ahead are expected to intensify. In December, India will embark on a multi-format series in South Africa, which will include a one-off Test, three ODIs, and three T20Is. This series will serve as a critical test for the team’s ability to maintain their momentum and apply the lessons learned under Muzumdar’s guidance.

The upcoming matches will not only provide an opportunity for the team to showcase their skills but will also be a significant step in their quest to establish themselves as a dominant force in women’s cricket on the global stage.
