Investors Borrow Rs 2,228 Crore to Purchase Jio Platforms Shares on Listing Day

The CSR Journal Magazine

Investors borrowed Rs 22.28 billion (Rs 2,228 crore) to acquire shares of Jio Platforms on its listing day, marking a notable event in India’s margin trading facility (MTF) market. This substantial borrowing reflects the strong demand for the stock, which made its market debut on Wednesday, October 28. The shares surged by 26.7 per cent during initial trading, elevating the valuation of the telecom and digital services company to approximately $137 billion. This performance positioned Jio Platforms as India’s second-largest listed company by market capitalisation.

Position within Margin Trading Market

As of October 28, data from the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) indicated that only HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries, and BSE Ltd had larger margin trading positions than Jio Platforms. The NSE categorised Jio Platforms under Group 1 securities, while the BSE assigned it to a similar Group A category. This classification allowed the stock to qualify for margin funding from the outset of its trading session.

The margin trading facility (MTF) is an exchange-approved product enabling investors to borrow funds from brokers at an interest rate for purchasing shares. In India, interest rates for margin trading generally range from 9 per cent to 18 per cent per annum. The ability to borrow against their investments has attracted a segment of investors who believe that Jio Platforms could yield returns exceeding the borrowing costs, as noted by Ashish Nanda, president and digital business head at Kotak Neo.

Despite the large margin-funded position in Jio Platforms, which stands at Rs 2,228 crore, it constitutes only 0.17 per cent of the company’s total market capitalisation. Dhiraj Relli, managing director and CEO of HDFC Securities, highlighted this perspective, indicating that while the borrowing amount appears significant, it is relatively small in the context of the company’s overall valuation.

Market Context and Investor Sentiment

The development occurs amid a contraction in India’s overall cash market margin trading book, which has seen a decline following a series of retail margin-call liquidations. As of October 28, the MTF book was recorded at Rs 1.51 lakh crore, down from a peak of Rs 1.59 lakh crore on September 30. This backdrop has made the strong interest in Jio Platforms particularly noteworthy.

Deven Choksey, managing director of DRChoksey Finserv, commented on the anticipated interest in Jio Platforms, stating that it was expected to attract attention from investors across various segments. He indicated that the stock’s eligibility for margin trading was a natural progression given its market potential. The robust demand for Jio Platforms shares reflects broader investor confidence in the company and its future prospects.

As Jio Platforms continues to establish its presence in the market, the initial response from investors underscores the growing appetite for innovative telecom and digital service offerings in India. The stock’s performance on its debut day may set the tone for future trading and investment strategies within the sector.
