Late Dinners and Poor Bedtime Habits Linked to Increased Risk of Night-Time Acidity

The CSR Journal Magazine

Night-time acidity can be a troubling issue for many individuals, often manifesting as a burning sensation in the chest or a sour taste in the mouth. These symptoms can disrupt sleep and daily activities, leading to a significant decline in quality of life. While occasional acidity is common, recurrent symptoms during the night may indicate a more serious underlying condition.

Acid reflux occurs when stomach contents flow back into the oesophagus, the tube responsible for transporting food from the mouth to the stomach. Frequent occurrences of this reflux, particularly when accompanied by troublesome symptoms, may suggest gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which requires medical attention.

Impact of Late Dinners on Acid Reflux

A busy lifestyle often leads to irregular eating patterns, with many individuals opting for late-night dinners. This habit can exacerbate the risk of acid reflux, especially when individuals lie down shortly after eating. A full stomach takes time to empty, and reclining can facilitate the upward movement of stomach contents.

When a person lies down immediately after a meal, the likelihood of experiencing reflux increases, particularly if the valve between the stomach and oesophagus is not functioning properly. Additionally, during sleep, the body produces less saliva, which normally helps clear any refluxed material from the oesophagus, further contributing to discomfort.

Dr Saurabh Bansal, a General Minimal Access and Gastrointestinal Surgeon, emphasises the importance of recognising the triggers of recurring reflux symptoms. While throat irritation and coughing may sometimes be linked to acid reflux, they can also arise from other medical conditions that warrant evaluation.

Dietary Factors and Lifestyle Choices

There is no universal food that triggers acid reflux for everyone; however, certain items such as coffee, alcohol, chocolate, and high-fat meals may provoke symptoms in some individuals. It is essential for people to identify specific food triggers rather than eliminating entire food groups from their diets.

Portion sizes also play a crucial role in managing symptoms. Consuming large meals and then lying down can lead to increased discomfort. Furthermore, excess body weight may exert additional pressure on the stomach, contributing to acid reflux. Conditions like hiatus hernia can also exacerbate the situation.

Making simple adjustments to evening routines can significantly alleviate night-time acidity. It is advisable to maintain a gap of at least three hours between dinner and bedtime, opt for lighter meals in the evening, and avoid lying down immediately after eating. Additionally, recognising food triggers can help manage symptoms effectively.

When to Seek Medical Advice

Individuals who frequently wake up with acidity, experience regular heartburn, or find that reflux disrupts their sleep should seek medical advice. Certain symptoms necessitate immediate attention, including difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, and gastrointestinal bleeding.

New or severe chest pain, particularly when associated with breathlessness, sweating, or pain radiating towards the arm or jaw, requires urgent medical evaluation, as it may indicate a heart-related issue rather than acidity. Night-time acidity, while seemingly minor, can signal more serious health concerns that need to be addressed.

In conclusion, while lifestyle changes may provide relief from night-time acidity, persistent symptoms should not be overlooked. A thorough medical evaluation is essential to identify the underlying causes and ensure appropriate treatment.
