Sikandar Raza Achieves Historic Century Against Afghanistan

The CSR Journal Magazine

Sikandar Raza, the captain of Zimbabwe, made headlines by scoring an unbeaten century against Afghanistan during the second T20I held in Sharjah on Thursday. At the age of 40, Raza achieved a remarkable 106 not out off just 56 balls, which included five fours and nine sixes. Despite his outstanding performance, Zimbabwe was unable to secure a victory, ultimately losing the match by 19 runs, which allowed Afghanistan to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Raza’s achievement is particularly noteworthy as he became the first Zimbabwean cricketer to score two centuries in T20 internationals. Additionally, he set a record as the oldest batter from a Full Member nation to reach a T20I century, accomplishing this milestone at 40 years and 188 days old. The record for the oldest player overall to score a T20I hundred remains with Germany’s Mussadiq Ahmed, who scored 122 against Austria earlier this year.

The list of the oldest T20I centurions from Full Member nations includes notable players such as Brendan Taylor from Zimbabwe and Rohit Sharma from India, who have also made significant contributions to the format.

Zimbabwe’s Struggles in the Match

Zimbabwe faced significant challenges during their innings, finding themselves in a precarious position at 82 for five while chasing Afghanistan’s total. Raza’s arrival at the crease proved crucial, as he partnered with debutant Tafadzwa Tsiga to form an unbroken 120-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Tsiga contributed 31 not out from 23 balls, but Zimbabwe ultimately fell short, finishing their innings at 202 for five.

Afghanistan’s bowlers had initially placed Zimbabwe under severe pressure, with the team struggling to recover after losing early wickets. The Zimbabwean batting order faltered, but Raza’s resilience provided a glimmer of hope. However, the target of 221 runs proved to be too steep, leading to their defeat.

Earlier in the match, Zimbabwe’s bowlers had managed to reduce Afghanistan to a dismal 38 for five, showcasing their effectiveness in the opening stages. Brad Evans made an immediate impact by dismissing both Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Mohammad Akram in the first over. Kundai Matigimu continued the assault, taking out Ibrahim Zadran and Shahidullah with his first two deliveries, leaving Afghanistan in a precarious position.

Afghanistan’s Remarkable Comeback

Despite the early collapse, Afghanistan managed to recover thanks to a remarkable partnership between Azmatullah Omarzai and Ijaz Ahmad Ahmadzai. The duo combined to score 142 runs for the sixth wicket, which significantly shifted the momentum of the game. Their aggressive batting enabled Afghanistan to post a total of 221 for seven, with an impressive 176 runs scored in the final 10 overs of their innings.

In addition to the batting feats, Rashid Khan made history by becoming the first bowler in men’s T20I cricket to take 200 wickets. This achievement adds to the significance of the match, highlighting the remarkable performances on both sides.

As the series progresses, Zimbabwe will look to regroup and strategise for the final match, while Afghanistan aims to maintain their winning momentum. The cricketing world will be keenly watching the developments in this exciting series.
