The High Commission of India in London commemorated India’s 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026, with the ‘Suryapath Tiranga’ global relay of the national flag, accompanied by a flag hoisting ceremony. The event attracted hundreds of attendees who celebrated the occasion with fervour. Traditional performances included renditions of the Indian National Anthem, ‘Jana Gana Mana’, and ‘Vande Mataram’, alongside cultural showcases symbolising India’s struggle for freedom.

Indian High Commissioner to the UK, P Kumaran, presided over the celebrations, marking his inaugural Independence Day event since taking up his role at India House this year. Kumaran noted the significant contributions of the Indian diaspora and emphasised the strength of bilateral ties between India and the UK, particularly following the recent implementation of the free trade agreement.

Kumaran expressed his delight at the turnout, stating, “This is my first Independence Day celebration after my arrival in London as High Commissioner and it is wonderful to see the members of the vibrant Indian diaspora here who have achieved so much over the years.” His remarks highlighted the importance of community engagement in strengthening international relationships.

Suryapath Tiranga Initiative Explained

The ‘Suryapath Tiranga’ initiative was described by Kumaran as a series of sequential celebrations taking place globally, reflecting the movement of the sun from the East to the West. This initiative aims to unite the Indian diaspora worldwide, creating a remarkable display of unity and pride in Indian heritage. Kumaran elaborated on how this celebration showcases the global Indian community’s connection to their roots.

On the evolving India-UK relationship, the High Commissioner stated, “The India-UK historical relationship has grown into a multifaceted partnership and a modern one, encompassing various areas of the economy.” He mentioned the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) as a recent milestone, illustrating the collaborative efforts aimed at advancing both nations’ interests in the years ahead.

Kumaran highlighted his optimism for increased trade and investment opportunities, noting that the integration of manufacturing supply chains and enhanced research and development ecosystems would bolster cooperation and enhance people-to-people connections. This vision aims to foster deeper ties between the two countries.

Acknowledging Achievements and Community Engagement

During the celebration, Kumaran awarded prizes to participants of the ‘Bharat Ko Janiye’ online quiz and recognised the achievements of young British Indian chess champions. Seventeen-year-old Shreyas Royal and eleven-year-old Bodhana Sivanandan received accolades following their success at the British Chess Championships. Royal, who expressed his excitement at winning the championship, emphasised the support he has received throughout his journey.

Royal stated, “I’m absolutely ecstatic to have won the British championship. I believe I am the youngest to do so and have been receiving a ton of support. Today, it’s a huge honour to be here and be felicitated at the 80th Independence Day celebrations.” He was accompanied by his father, Jitendra Singh, who shared in the celebratory moment.

In addition to the flag hoisting and cultural performances, the High Commission organised a Viksit Bharat run in London, promoting community wellbeing and participation as part of the Independence Day celebrations. This event concluded a day marked by a blend of ceremonial observance and recognition of community achievements, underscoring the significance of the occasion for the Indian community in the UK.
