KL Rahul Slams 12th Test Century Against Afghanistan in Mullanpur

The CSR Journal Magazine

KL Rahul has shown exceptional form in Test cricket by scoring his twelfth century in the format during the only Test match against Afghanistan, held in Mullanpur. He reached this milestone in 164 balls but experienced some fortuitous moments throughout the innings. Notably, he struck eleven boundaries during his time at the crease, further highlighting his batting prowess.

This century comes on the heels of an outstanding run in 2025, where Rahul accumulated 813 runs across ten matches, solidifying his position at the top of the batting order for the Indian team. Interestingly, this match marks Rahul’s debut as the newly appointed vice-captain, although he did encounter some challenges at the outset.

Early Struggles and Luck

During the early phases of the innings, Afghanistan’s bowlers maintained consistent lengths and concentrated their efforts on exploiting Rahul’s off-side weakness. Despite a slow start, Rahul managed to make his presence felt with an initial boundary. However, his rhythm was disrupted, leading to a fortunate break in the eleventh over. Facing Ziaur Rahman Sharifi, he attempted a cut shot that appeared to be caught by the wicketkeeper.

As celebrations erupted among the Afghan players, Rahul remained at the crease, backed by the umpire’s indication of no edge. Opting not to challenge the decision, Afghanistan captain Hasmatullah Shahidi refrained from calling for a review, while UltraEdge later confirmed a faint nick on the ball. Following his escape, Rahul regained his composure and began to display attacking shot-making, which contributed significantly to his eventual success.

Rahul reached fifty immediately following the lunch break, initiating his innings with a couple of boundaries. He allowed his batting partner, Sai Sudharsan, to take the lead while adopting a more cautious approach to his shot selection. Between the thirty-third and forty-eighth overs, Rahul hit only a single boundary, focusing his efforts on rotating the strike to involve captain Shubman Gill.

Path to the Century and Quick Dismissal

As Rahul closed in on his hundred, he managed to score another boundary that pushed him to 97 runs. This was followed by a single and a double, allowing him to complete his century. However, following this achievement, an unfortunate turn of events led to his dismissal. Rahul attempted an expansive shot and was caught by Rahmanullah Gurbaz, marking the end of his innings in a somewhat anti-climactic manner.

This match against Afghanistan has been pivotal for Rahul, not just in terms of statistics but also in affirming his role within the team’s leadership structure. As his batting form continues to flourish, many will be watching closely to see how he performs in upcoming matches.

Overall, Rahul’s century showcases his talent and resilience in overcoming early challenges during the game. With his notable contributions, Indian cricket supporters will hope to see more such performances from him in the future.
