UN Appoints Rabab Fatima to Lead Afghanistan Mission

The United Nations has appointed Rabab Fatima, a senior diplomat from Bangladesh, as the head of its mission in Afghanistan. This announcement was made by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who named Fatima his Special Representative for Afghanistan and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). The news was released in a statement on Wednesday, July 16, 2026.

Fatima’s Diplomatic Background

Rabab Fatima previously served as Bangladesh’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations and is currently the Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States. She succeeds Roza Otunbayeva from Kyrgyzstan in her new role. The UN has highlighted Fatima’s extensive experience, which spans over thirty years in both national and international civil service roles.

During her tenure in New York from 2019 to 2022, Fatima held various significant positions. She served as President of the UNICEF Executive Board in 2020 and led the UN Women Executive Board in 2022. In addition, she was the Vice-President of the Executive Board of several UN agencies, including the UN Development Programme and the UN Population Fund in 2021. Notably, in 2022, she was elected as the first woman to Chair the Peacebuilding Commission and also contributed as a Vice-President of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.

Before her role at the UN, Fatima was Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Japan from 2016 to 2019 and held the position of Director-General in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2015 to 2016. Her diplomatic career includes assignments in various countries, including missions in New York, Geneva, Beijing, and Kolkata. She also served as a Regional Adviser for the International Organisation for Migration, focusing on issues related to climate change and migration from 2012 to 2015.

Fatima’s Academic Credentials

Rabab Fatima possesses a master’s degree in international relations and diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in the United States. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in social science from the University of Canberra in Australia. Her academic achievements reinforce her competence in navigating complex international issues.

In addition to her impressive educational background, Fatima is fluent in Bangla and English and has a working knowledge of Hindi and Urdu, further enabling her to engage with diverse communities. Her appointment is indicative of the UN’s strategic decision to place a seasoned diplomat in a critical leadership role within its Afghanistan mission.

As the new Head of UNAMA, Fatima is expected to address the challenges facing Afghanistan, focusing on humanitarian efforts and international cooperation. The UN’s decision to elevate her to this significant position demonstrates confidence in her abilities to steer the mission in a pivotal region undergoing transformation and instability.
