Khushboo Patani, sister of actress Disha Patani and a former officer in the Indian Army, has encouraged women to consider the use of air pistols for self-defence after a distressing incident in Jamui district, Bihar. During a demonstration on social media, she showcased the operation of a compressed-gas air pistol, emphasising the importance of professional training at local shooting ranges.

She highlighted that a reliable air pistol, typically a .177 calibre model, uses carbon dioxide cartridges rather than traditional gunpowder. The price range for such equipment is between Rs 60,000 and Rs 70,000, according to her advice. Khushboo urged women to learn quick-draw and handling techniques from established facilities to enhance their personal safety.

Details of the Jamui Incident

The call for self-defence comes in light of a serious incident that took place on September 19, where two Class 10 students in Jamui were reportedly harassed and assaulted by a group while returning from a local tourist site. The female student was subjected to groping and sexual assault, while her male companion was physically attacked. Footage of the incident emerged online, sparking widespread public outrage.

In response to the incident, local law enforcement registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. A Special Investigation Team was constituted to locate the perpetrators. As of September 23, police confirmed the arrest of five individuals connected to the case, with operations still ongoing to apprehend others involved.

Recent updates indicate that two additional suspects, identified as Saurabh Ram and Chhotu Ram, were arrested, raising the total number of arrests linked to the case to seven. The police have stated that the investigation remains a priority and efforts to trace remaining suspects are continuing.

Public Reactions and Calls for Safety

Khushboo Patani issued a public statement on September 22, questioning the current state of law and order in the region and demanding stringent judicial actions against the accused. Her advocacy for women’s self-defence has received attention amid heightened discussions about women’s safety, particularly following the Jamui incident.

Other public figures, including actor Kriti Sanon, have also weighed in on the issue, suggesting that discussions around misogyny should not be framed as a men versus women debate. Sanon voiced concerns on social media, particularly on Daughter’s Day, emphasising the everyday safety anxieties women face in public spaces. She pointed out the vigilance required of many young women in their daily lives.

The Jamui incident has created a policy discourse focusing on the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and support for women. The ongoing police investigation combines efforts to address both the current case and broader concerns regarding women’s security nationally.
