A private jet was compelled to execute an emergency landing in Nigeria after losing a door during its ascent shortly after takeoff. This occurred when the aircraft was climbing to an altitude of around 3,000 feet, prompting the crew to issue a distress call of “mayday, mayday, mayday.” The incident took place on Thursday, October 15, at approximately 4:20 pm, shortly after the aircraft, operated by Triton Aviation, departed from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

The jet was en route to Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, a journey expected to last just over one hour. Reports indicate that a crew member notified air traffic control about the door opening mid-flight, which triggered the emergency procedures. The aircraft was directed to return to Abuja for a safe landing.

Approximately 14 minutes after the distress call was made, the aircraft successfully landed back at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. Fire and emergency services were on standby upon its return, ensuring the safety of all onboard.

Recovery of the Missing Door

Upon landing, airport personnel discovered that the door was entirely absent from the aircraft. Subsequent investigations revealed that the missing door had been located on a nearby farmland. Reports from Gulf News, Sahara Reporters, and The Punch confirmed the recovery of the door, which raised further questions regarding the circumstances surrounding its loss.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident. However, it remains unclear how many individuals were aboard the aircraft at the time the door was lost. The aircraft involved has been identified as a CLSO, a midsize-to-large private jet typically used for corporate, charter, and private travel.

The swift response of the crew and air traffic control played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of those on board. The incident has highlighted the importance of emergency protocols in aviation, particularly when unexpected situations arise during flight.

Investigation Underway

In the aftermath of the incident, Nigeria’s aviation accident investigators have initiated an inquiry to ascertain the cause of the door loss. The investigation aims to determine whether the incident was a result of mechanical failure, maintenance oversight, or another contributing factor.

Investigators are currently examining the aircraft’s maintenance records and operational history to gather relevant information. They are also assessing the condition of the aircraft prior to takeoff, which may provide insights into the circumstances leading to the door’s loss.

The findings of this investigation will be crucial in understanding the factors that led to this unusual incident. Authorities are committed to ensuring that any potential issues are addressed to enhance safety protocols within the aviation sector.

As the investigation progresses, further updates are expected to be released, detailing the findings and any recommendations that may arise from this incident. The aviation community remains vigilant, prioritising safety in light of this occurrence.
