Consumer Companies Face Challenges This Festive Season Amid Inflation

The CSR Journal Magazine

The festive season is critical for consumer companies in India, with sales during this period playing a significant role in their annual revenue. The impact of this season varies by product category. For manufacturers of essential goods such as packaged food, sweets, snacks, and edible oils, there is typically a noticeable spike in sales. However, for sectors like jewellery, consumer durables, and apparel, this period can account for as much as one-third to over half of their yearly earnings.

Both online and offline retail channels take advantage of this season by launching exclusive products and offering substantial discounts around key festivals such as Dussehra and Diwali. This sales momentum often extends into the Christmas period and the end of the year, further amplifying its importance for businesses.

Challenges Encountered by Companies This Season

This year, various challenges have emerged that are reshaping demand forecasts for consumer companies. Notably, the timing of major festivals has divided the core festive season between the September and December quarters. Many companies have reported that this shift has delayed anticipated sales into October, adversely affecting second-quarter outcomes while potentially enhancing third-quarter results.

Additionally, ongoing inflation in input costs is putting pressure on corporate profitability. Significant price increases in crude oil, materials linked to crude such as plastic packaging, agricultural inputs like milk and sugar, and essential hardware components such as copper and memory chips have all contributed to margin compression. In response, many companies have opted to raise prices while offering more conservative discounts this season.

Consumer spending patterns are also showing signs of change. Early indicators are mixed, with e-commerce platforms reporting strong initial sales figures. However, the demand for electronics, particularly smartphones and laptops, has seen a marked decline due to rising memory chip prices, which have led manufacturers to increase retail prices. Broader inflationary trends are affecting working-class budgets, which in turn is reducing demand for mass-market products.

Strategies Employed by Companies to Sustain Demand

To sustain demand during the festive season, many companies are choosing to absorb some of the increased input costs rather than passing them entirely onto consumers. For example, LG Electronics raised prices on air conditioners while maintaining stable pricing across its broader consumer electronics range. Similarly, despite rising wholesale milk prices in India, companies like Nestlé have kept retail prices steady, while others initially raised prices earlier in the year.

Retailers are also focusing on premium offerings to drive growth, as rising costs threaten to impact demand for mass-market items. This strategy aims to maintain profitability while navigating the challenges posed by inflation and changing consumer behaviour.

Potential Risks of K-Shaped Consumption

There is a possibility that consumption trends may revert to a ‘K-shaped’ recovery, although current data does not indicate a pronounced shift. Rising prices for essential goods and high-value discretionary items often disproportionately affect working-class consumers. Early signs of strain are visible in sectors like smartphones and value fashion, alongside a slight increase in bank financing for festive purchases on e-commerce platforms such as Amazon.

A critical factor to monitor is the ongoing El Niño phenomenon, which poses a risk to upcoming planting and harvest cycles, potentially impacting agricultural incomes. While the government had previously reduced GST rates across various consumer categories to stimulate demand and mitigate K-shaped consumption, the effects of those tax benefits have largely diminished.
