BJP Calls for Black Attire Protest Against AAP Following Activist’s Murder

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Punjab BJP chief, Kewal Singh Dhillon, has urged the citizens of the state to don black turbans and dupattas as a form of protest against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government following the murder of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota. Jhota was shot dead by a medical store owner on October 13 after confronting him about allegedly selling drugs in Mansa. Known for his efforts to expose the illegal sale of addictive substances at chemist shops, Jhota had been live on Facebook questioning the chemist about his practices before the incident occurred.

Demands for CBI Investigation Intensify

During a protest in Mansa on Saturday, Dhillon reiterated his call for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into Jhota’s murder, expressing doubts about the likelihood of justice from the state government. He visited Jhota’s family to offer condolences and support, emphasising the need for a statewide symbolic protest until justice is achieved. Dhillon described Jhota as a warrior dedicated to protecting the youth of Punjab from drug addiction, alleging that the AAP government had failed to fulfil its commitment to eradicate drugs within three months of taking office.

Dhillon further claimed that the government had not only neglected to tackle drug trafficking effectively but had also failed to safeguard those who speak out against the issue. He highlighted the case of Gulzar Singh from Toor Vanjara, alleging that he had been driven to suicide after voicing his concerns about drugs. Dhillon referenced other high-profile cases, including the murders of singer Sidhu Moosewala and kabaddi player Sandeep Nangal Ambian, asserting that their families continue to await justice.

In his efforts to seek accountability, Dhillon revealed that he had written to the Punjab Governor on the first day of the controversy, requesting a CBI investigation into Jhota’s murder. He insisted that an independent inquiry is essential to restore public confidence in the investigation process. Dhillon also mentioned that the Union government had taken serious note of the situation, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah reportedly seeking explanations from the Punjab government regarding three cases, including that of Jhota.

BJP’s Commitment to Support Jhota’s Family

Assuring the family of his unwavering support, Dhillon stated that the BJP would stand by them throughout their quest for justice. The proposed campaign encouraging the wearing of black turbans and dupattas aims to transform the call for justice into a widespread expression of dissent against the AAP government. This initiative seeks to hold the government accountable for its handling of drug-related issues and law enforcement in Punjab.

Dhillon’s statements reflect a broader concern regarding drug-related violence and the safety of activists opposing the drug trade. The BJP’s campaign is designed not only to honour Jhota’s legacy but also to raise awareness about the ongoing drug crisis in the state. As the protests gain momentum, the BJP aims to position itself as a voice for accountability and justice in the face of alleged governmental inaction.

The call for black attire as a form of protest highlights the growing tensions between the BJP and the AAP, particularly concerning the latter’s management of drug-related issues in Punjab. As the situation develops, the BJP’s actions may influence public sentiment and the political landscape in the region.
