Airtel Launches Three New Voice-Only Prepaid Plans for Feature Phones

The CSR Journal Magazine

Bharti Airtel has introduced three new voice-only prepaid recharge plans just days before the deadline set by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The company has confirmed the addition of these packs, which are priced at ₹185, ₹203, and ₹206, offering varying validity periods of 28 days, 30 days, and a calendar month, respectively. Each plan includes unlimited local and national voice calls along with 300 SMS.

The new offerings are now available for customers through the Airtel app, specifically for prepaid accounts. This move comes as part of Airtel’s compliance with TRAI’s recent directive, which requires telecom operators to provide voice-only plans to cater to a segment of users who primarily rely on voice communication.

In September, TRAI announced a compliance deadline of October 21, allowing operators a 30-day window to implement these changes. Airtel has become the first telecom service provider to roll out such plans, responding to consumer feedback regarding the limited value of data-heavy recharge options for users of feature phones.

Market Context and Consumer Demand

India is home to approximately 220 million feature phone users, a demographic that has been growing steadily. According to CyberMedia Research, the user base for 2G-based feature phones in India increased by 5 per cent year-on-year as of August. Itel leads this segment with a market share of 38 per cent, followed by Lava at 30 per cent and HMD at 20 per cent.

The rising costs of components have made new mobile devices more expensive, resulting in extended replacement and upgrade cycles. Many users are opting to retain their existing phones for longer periods, which has further driven the demand for affordable voice-centric plans. The introduction of these voice-only packs is expected to address the needs of this significant user base.

By eliminating data bundles from these new plans, Airtel aims to lower the prices for voice-only options. This strategy aligns with TRAI’s mandate, which stipulates that telecom operators must offer recharge plans with a validity of 30 days or less, ensuring that these voice-only plans remain competitive with those that include 4G or 5G data bundles.

Future Prospects for Voice-Only Plans

The launch of these three new recharge options marks a significant shift in Airtel’s approach to catering to its customers’ needs. As the company continues to adapt to the evolving telecommunications landscape, it is likely that additional voice-only plans may be introduced in the future, particularly if these initial offerings prove popular among users.

Telecom analysts suggest that Airtel’s proactive stance in introducing these voice-only plans could set a precedent for other operators, including Reliance Jio and Vi, to follow suit. As consumer preferences shift towards more affordable communication options, the demand for such plans is expected to increase.

In conclusion, Airtel’s new voice-only prepaid plans not only comply with regulatory requirements but also respond to the growing demand among feature phone users. As the market evolves, it will be essential to monitor how these plans perform and whether they lead to further innovations within the telecom sector.
