Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan Denies Allegations of CPM-BJP Collaboration

The CSR Journal Magazine

Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan categorically rejected accusations of an alleged alliance between the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Bharatiya Janata Party. The allegations were made by Congress leader KC Venugopal, whom Vijayan described as making “baseless and absurd” claims during a press conference. He stated that the history of the Congress party includes associations with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), mentioning instances as far back as 1971 when Congress candidates had ties with RSS-backed leaders.

Historical Context Amid Allegations

During his address, Vijayan highlighted the Congress’s history of forming the so-called “coalition of convenience” to criticize the party’s current stance. He remarked on the Congress party’s role in facilitating the BJP’s electoral success, including their contributions to the BJP’s initial victory in constituencies like Nemom. Vijayan asserted that these recent allegations from the Congress seem to serve as a defense mechanism against its own past political behavior, noting that the BJP has consistently viewed the Left as its primary adversary.

Congress Makes Its Case

In his comments, Venugopal maintained that there exists a “clear and unholy nexus” between the BJP and the CPI(M) in Kerala. He argued that a closer examination of the candidate lists from both parties would reveal signs of collaboration. According to Venugopal, accusations are supported by observable evidence and are not merely speculative. He portrayed Vijayan as a compromised leader under pressure, alleging that fear of central investigative agencies has silenced strong opposition from the Chief Minister.

Concerns Over Political Dynamics

Venugopal further claimed that the CPI(M) is acting out of fear of losing its foothold in Kerala, thereby engaging in what he labeled an “unethical political arrangement” with the BJP. He stressed that the CPI(M)’s actions appear to facilitate BJP advantages, particularly in traditionally strong constituencies for the BJP. The Congress leader accused both parties of misleading their respective party workers and manipulating electoral dynamics to secure a favorable outcome.

Upcoming Election Context

These allegations and denials arise as Kerala prepares for its Legislative Assembly elections, set to take place on April 9. The voting will cover all 140 seats in the Assembly, with results expected to be announced on May 4. The electoral battle is anticipated to be contested primarily between the Left Democratic Front, led by the CPI(M), and the United Democratic Front, spearheaded by the Indian National Congress. Additionally, the National Democratic Alliance, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, will also participate in the elections.
