KC Tyagi Skips JD(U) Membership Drive, Affirms Bond with Nitish Kumar

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a recent statement, Janata Dal (United) senior leader KC Tyagi revealed that he chose not to take part in the party’s latest membership renewal initiative. He emphasized that there are no personal issues between him and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar regarding the allocation of Rajya Sabha seats.

Tyagi, who has been a foundational member of JD(U), stressed that his connection with Kumar and the state party organization remains unaltered. He highlighted his historical role in the party, having co-founded it alongside notable figures such as George Fernandes, Sharad Yadav, and Digvijay Singh. “I have been a member since the beginning. However, I did not engage in this recent membership drive,” he stated, clarifying his ongoing loyalty to the party.

No Ambitions for Rajya Sabha Seat

Addressing widespread speculation regarding his aspirations for a parliamentary position, Tyagi firmly denied any intentions of seeking a Rajya Sabha ticket. He referred to past interactions with Nitish Kumar, specifically mentioning a time in 2013 when Kumar had offered him a ticket, which he did not pursue. “There has never been a situation where I sought a Rajya Sabha ticket,” Tyagi affirmed. This declaration follows Kumar’s recent success in the Rajya Sabha elections, further spotlighting Tyagi’s distinct non-participation in both the election and membership drive.

Long-standing Relationship with Nitish Kumar

Tyagi took the opportunity to reaffirm his commitment to the party and his long-standing affiliation with Kumar, recalling their shared history spanning fifty years. He outlined their collaborative efforts through significant political movements, including the Jayaprakash Narayan initiative and various party formations. “I have not resigned from the party. My relationship with Nitish Kumar is steeped in history, and I remain committed to our shared cause,” he indicated.

Critique of Congress Party

Shifting focus, Tyagi also criticized the Congress party, particularly in light of the recent defection of sitting MP Pradyut Bordoloi to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He characterized the Congress as declining due to ineffective leadership and flawed policies, suggesting that the party is losing its influence. Tyagi’s remarks came following Bordoloi’s accusations of feeling sidelined by the Congress leadership, leading to his departure and subsequent alignment with the BJP.

Context of Bordoloi’s Resignation

Bordoloi’s transition to the BJP was marked by a public announcement in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia. He clarified that his resignation from Congress was influenced not solely by ticket-related disputes for the Assam Assembly elections but was the result of multiple factors that contributed to his disenchantment with the party. This incident underscores ongoing shifts within Assam’s political landscape and reflects broader challenges faced by national parties like Congress amidst internal strife.
