Bihar: Tejashwi Yadav and RJD Workers Detained During Protest March to Lok Bhavan

The CSR Journal Magazine

Tejashwi Yadav, the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly and a prominent figure of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), was detained alongside numerous party members, including RJD MP Misa Bharti, on August 19. The group was participating in a protest march towards Lok Bhavan in Patna, raising issues related to students, unemployment, alleged examination paper leaks, and demands for greater transparency in assessment processes.

While marching, some demonstrators reportedly climbed onto the police bus transporting Yadav and other arrested individuals. Following his detainment, Yadav expressed that the government fears the voices of young people and reaffirmed the RJD’s commitment to addressing the issues affecting students and job seekers. He commented on the temporary nature of government, stating that every administration has an end and stressed the ongoing efforts to represent the concerns of citizens.

In the course of his remarks, Yadav highlighted that their demonstration was peaceful and carried out under the national flag, underscoring their intent to advocate for rights and justice rather than incite violence.

Student Involvement and Demands

Misa Bharti, also detained during the march, echoed sentiments shared by Yadav, asserting that students in Bihar are dedicated to their cause and willing to face imprisonment if necessary, until their demands are met. Specifically, they are calling for the suspension of the District Magistrate of Siwan due to grievances related to administrative actions. Bharti emphasised the relentless resolve of students and the broader public to pursue their objectives despite legal risks.

The RJD leadership contends that this collective action is a reflection of widespread dissatisfaction among the youth in the state, particularly in regard to educational and employment opportunities. The ongoing protests, according to Bharti, signify a commitment to justice and accountability, not just for students but for the community as a whole.

In recent events leading up to the protest, there has been significant media focus on an incident involving the police. A Bihar government report to the Supreme Court indicated that a police constable discharged an AK-47 rifle into the air during a student protest in Siwan. Although officials claimed that no protester was injured by this action, the incident has raised serious concerns regarding police conduct, leading to the suspension of the constable involved.

Government Response and Context

The government’s response to the protests has been cautious, as officials navigate the dual pressures of maintaining public order while responding to the demands of the youth. The administration stated that adequate measures would be taken to ensure peace and stability but has faced criticism over its approach to handling student grievances. The events surrounding the protest highlight a broader trend of youth activism and a push for accountability from those in governance.

Simultaneously, there is growing scrutiny over educational policies and employment opportunities for students in Bihar. The protests serve as a platform for young individuals to voice their concerns and seek government intervention. The RJD, leveraging these issues, aims to consolidate support from the youth demographic, positioning itself as an advocate for change and reform.

As the protests continue, both the RJD and the Bihar state government remain under pressure to engage in dialogue regarding the pressing issues of education, employment, and transparency in public governance. The resolution of these protests and the responses they elicit will likely shape the political landscape in Bihar moving forward.
