Karnataka Congress MLA Receives Life Sentence in Murder Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

A Special Court for People’s Representatives in Bengaluru has sentenced sixteen individuals, including Congress MLA Vinay Kulkarni, to life imprisonment for their involvement in the murder of BJP leader Yogesh Gowda. In addition to the life sentences, the court has also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on each of the convicted individuals. Another accused in this case was given a seven-year prison sentence for their role.

MLA Kulkarni, who represents the Dharwad Assembly constituency, is now likely to face disqualification from his position. Judge Santhosh Gajanan Bhat delivered the verdict on Wednesday, finding Kulkarni and the others guilty of charges related to criminal conspiracy and murder. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had sought a life sentence without remission for Kulkarni, while his legal representative called for a lesser sentence, citing his contributions to social services and his family responsibilities.

Background of the Case

The case traces back to June 15, 2016, when Yogesh Gowda, a member of the BJP zilla panchayat, was attacked and killed by hired attackers at his gym in Dharwad. At that time, Kulkarni was serving as a minister and was later identified as the principal conspirator in the case. The CBI accused him of orchestrating the murder to eliminate Gowda, whom he viewed as a potential political threat in the region.

Following persistent demands from Gowda’s family, the then ruling BJP government transferred the investigation to the CBI in 2019. The agency subsequently filed a supplementary chargesheet in 2020, which identified Kulkarni as the mastermind behind the violent act. In connection with the investigation, Kulkarni was arrested by the CBI the same year.

In August 2021, the Supreme Court granted him bail under specific conditions, including a restriction on entering Dharwad district. However, this bail was revoked in June 2025 when allegations arose regarding his attempts to intimidate witnesses and influence the prosecution. Kulkarni sought bail again in January 2026, but the High Court dismissed this request, citing legal propriety. Ultimately, the Supreme Court granted him bail on February 27, stating that all witnesses in the case had been examined.

Implications of the Verdict

The recent conviction of Vinay Kulkarni adds to an increasing number of current and former legislators across India facing criminal charges. For the Congress party in Karnataka, the ruling presents a significant political challenge in Dharwad, especially if Kulkarni is disqualified from his position. The party may need to strategise on fielding a suitable candidate for the constituency in upcoming elections.

This development highlights ongoing concerns regarding the influence of crime in politics, particularly in Karnataka, where the political landscape has become increasingly contentious. The ramifications of this verdict are likely to unfold as the region prepares for future electoral contests.

As the political scene continues to evolve, the Congress party will have to carefully navigate the challenges posed by the ruling if they aim to maintain their footing in Dharwad and beyond.
