Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has expressed support for the call demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. This statement follows Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s earlier appeal regarding the Chief Election Commission’s oversight amid ongoing disputes over the electoral process. Shivakumar has raised concerns that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls may be exploited for political purposes.

According to the CM, many citizens are dissatisfied with the current execution of the SIR. He emphasised that while the revision is necessary, the method by which it is currently conducted requires scrutiny. “We are living in the largest democratic country; this is not a dictatorship,” he stated during a press briefing, suggesting that the manipulation of this process is detrimental to fair elections.

Opposition Agitations Across Multiple States

The criticism directed at Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has escalated, particularly following a report from the Indian Express. This report indicates that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised concerns about decisions and procedures related to electoral rolls on at least fourteen occasions in a span of ten months. Various opposition parties, including Congress, have mobilised in support of the demand for Kumar’s resignation, staging protests in several states such as Delhi, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh.

Shivakumar’s comments on the issue align with the mounting discontent among opposition members. He acknowledged the opposition’s right to voice their apprehensions regarding the Chief Election Commission’s decisions. He stated, “Of course, the opposition party has every right and every voice to express its concerns,” reinforcing the accountability of elected officials.

As these protests unfold, several Congress state units have echoed the call for Kumar’s resignation, broadening the scope of discontent. The state governments involved are reportedly attentive to the sentiments of their constituents regarding this matter.

ECI Responds and Defends Its Procedures

The ECI has characterised the objections raised by its commissioners as routine operational queries rather than instances of institutional dissent. The Commission maintains that its decision-making process is structured to allow for internal feedback and administrative suggestions, all part of its operation as a multi-member constitutional body.

Despite the controversies, the ECI asserts that all significant decisions regarding the SIR have been made unanimously, countering assertions of political bias or procedural irregularities. This standpoint underscores the Commission’s commitment to maintaining an impartial electoral process.
