The CSR Journal Magazine

Kamya Bhardwaj, a student of B.Sc. Zoology Honours at Dyal Singh College, Delhi University, has remarkably established a new record for the continuous round-trip swim across the Palk Strait. This achievement, announced on April 14, 2023, highlights her exceptional stamina and determination in overcoming physical challenges and mental hurdles throughout the arduous journey.

Bhardwaj completed the swim from Dhanushkodi to Talaimannar and back within a time of 18 hours and 15 minutes. This significant achievement surpassed the previous record of 19 hours and 20 minutes, which was held by Miss Sujitha DevVarman. The expedition was organised by the Open Water Swimming Academy (OWSA) based in Theni, Tamil Nadu.

Challenges Faced During the Swim

The Palk Strait is infamous for its unpredictable mariner conditions, which posed significant challenges for the swimmer. The open water marathon commenced at 1:30 PM on April 12, 2023, from Arichalmunai. During her swim, Bhardwaj encountered numerous difficulties, including high tides, strong opposing currents, and frequent stings from jellyfish, which testing her resilience and endurance.

Despite these adversities, Bhardwaj reached Oormala, Talaimannar in Sri Lanka at 10:35 PM. Showcasing remarkable determination, she immediately commenced the return journey, swimming through the night to navigate the treacherous waters back to the Indian coast. This portion of the journey required not just physical strength but also mental fortitude, as night swimming added an extra layer of difficulty.

She finally arrived back at the shores of Arichalmunai at 7:45 AM on April 13, 2023, where she was met with enthusiastic applause from a supportive crowd, including friends, family, and officials. This warm reception stood as a testament to her perseverance and tenacity throughout the challenge.

Record Verification and Future Aspirations

The record-breaking swim was closely monitored by official observers from the Swimming Federation of India (SFI), namely Dr. Vijayakumar and M. Jayakumar, who confirmed the timing and the conditions of the swim. Their oversight ensured that the achievement met formal standards for record-breaking swims, accentuating the credibility of Bhardwaj’s accomplishment.

This notable success adds to the growing prominence of open water swimming in India, with athletes increasingly pushing the boundaries of endurance sports. Bhardwaj’s triumph not only sets a new benchmark for future swimmers but also inspires both aspiring athletes and those wishing to pursue challenges that demand similar levels of commitment and dedication.

As Bhardwaj continues her academic journey, her accomplishments in open water swimming may encourage more young people to engage in sports that promote physical fitness and mental resilience. Her record stands as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through hard work and determination.
