The situation surrounding the ongoing protest in Jharkhand has escalated, with a student leader being hospitalised due to health complications. Rahul Kranti, who has been on hunger strike since Tuesday night, was admitted to Ranchi Sadar Hospital after his condition worsened. He is one of six protesters who have been fasting as part of a larger demonstration against alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations.

The protest against the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) has now entered its fourteenth day. In response to the situation, two student unions have announced plans to stage a march to the state assembly, where discussions surrounding recruitment issues are currently taking place. The demonstrators are demanding the cancellation of the 14th JPSC Civil Services Examination, the establishment of an independent investigation into the alleged irregularities, and more extensive reforms within the state’s recruitment bodies.

Political Leaders Show Support at the Hospital

Jharkhand’s Health Minister, Irfan Ansari, also made an appearance at Sadar Hospital, where he interacted with the students receiving treatment. He stated that his visit was in line with the directives from Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Ansari expressed that the health and safety of the students are paramount, ensuring that they are receiving appropriate medical care under the supervision of qualified physicians.

Earlier on the day of his hospitalisation, Kranti had raised concerns regarding a lack of medical attention at the protest site. He reported that despite requests for a health check-up, no doctors arrived until 8.30 am. The protest group has expanded its ranks, with five additional members, including two women, joining leader Devendra Nath Mahto on a hunger strike initiated on Tuesday night. Mahto has been fasting for six days as part of the protest.

The demonstrators are calling for a thorough investigation into the alleged irregularities associated with the 14th Jharkhand PSC Civil Services Examination. They are advocating for either a probe led by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or a panel of retired high court judges from outside the state. Additionally, reform in the Jharkhand Public Service Commission and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission has become a central theme of their agitation as the protests continue.
