Jaipur on High Alert: Internet Suspended, 3,000 Cops Deployed as JDA Removes Religious Structures

Jaipur witnessed a major anti-encroachment drive by the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) on Monday. Internet services were suspended and over 3,000 police personnel deployed across Jaipur to maintain law and order situation. This operation was a long due road widening project Nandpuri Road. The drive is being done to expand the width to 1.5-kilometre, the current width is 25–30 feet. In order to prevent misinformation and rumor on social media, the internet services have been suspended.

Religious structures removed

Under this demolition drive, five religious structures including a mosque, two temples, a satsang hall, and a mazar. As per JDA officials these structures have been disturbing the work of road-widening projects for many years. Even notices were issued to occupants, however the owners had not removed it. The Deputy Inspector General of the JDA Vigilance Wing Anand Sharma, said 134 encroachments were removed on May 22. However religious bodies were left untouched and given additional time to comply, but now the deadline has passed and the structures are intact. “This road expansion project will improve connectivity between Jagatpura and key areas such as Malviya Nagar, Pradhan Marg, and Apex Circle. This will reduce traffic considerably,” said an official. He further noted that at least 50 residential colonies will be benefited by this project.

Security Arrangements

In order to maintain peace and order in the area, around 3,000 police personnel are deployed across the city, Rajasthan Armed Constabulary (RAC) have also been deployed. Police forces from Kota, Bharatpur ranges have also been brought to Jaipur. Areas which are termed as sensitive zones are kept under tight surveillance, warnings have been issued, strict action will be taken if anyone circulates misleading and sensitive content online.

Congress MLA Rafiq Khan has asked why this action was taken on urgent basis. He even argued that before demolition of places of worship, necessary consensus should have been taken. Representatives associated with the mosque and shrine said action is targeted.
