Jai Ram Thakur Justifies Delhi Visit Amid Criticism on Assistance to Himachal Pradesh

The CSR Journal Magazine

BJP MLA and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur has defended his recent trip to Delhi, where he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He stated that discussions centred on the current situation in Himachal Pradesh, specifically addressing the damage caused by the monsoon and the required assistance for the state. Thakur remarked that meeting with the Prime Minister is part of his constitutional duties and inherently involves conversations about the conditions prevailing in Himachal Pradesh.

During his exchange with ANI, Thakur emphasised that any meeting with the Prime Minister would naturally include an update on the state’s circumstances, including rainfall and other pertinent issues. His comments arose following critiques from Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, who questioned the necessity of Thakur’s frequent visits to Delhi.

Allegations of Insufficient Financial Aid Addressed

Chief Minister Sukhu had alleged that despite the Central Government’s announcements regarding financial assistance of approximately Rs 1,500 crore, the funds had not yet reached the state. Responding to this allegation, Thakur asserted that the Central Government had actually provided more support than what was requested by Himachal Pradesh during the ongoing disaster. He claimed that Prime Minister Modi had given his state more than its fair share on several occasions.

Thakur went on to question the distribution of the funds, asking if the aid had specifically reached the families most affected by the calamity. He pointed out that it was crucial for the Chief Minister to clarify whether financial support had truly impacted those whose homes and livelihoods had been devastated by the recent events.

He reaffirmed his belief that the Central Government had extended its full support to Himachal Pradesh and urged the state government to ensure that the benefits were effectively passed on to the families in need. Thakur highlighted that the discussions in his meeting with the Prime Minister also extended to future support measures and developmental needs for Himachal Pradesh.

Thakur Responds to Criticism Over Political Motives

Despite accusations that his meeting with the Prime Minister was meant to undermine the state administration, Thakur rejected this notion. He stressed that the Opposition, including himself, is equally invested in the welfare of Himachal Pradesh, similar to the ruling party. His assertion implies that the Opposition’s primary concern is the well-being of the state, irrespective of political affiliations.

In reiterating his stance, Thakur noted that the Opposition’s commitment to the state’s welfare does not diminish simply due to their political standing. He underscored that they share a common goal with those in power: to achieve the best for Himachal Pradesh.

In conclusion, Thakur’s recent statements reflect his position regarding financial assistance from the Centre and demonstrate a commitment to address the concerns of the people in the state amid ongoing challenges.
