Mumbai Indians Continue Coaching Overhaul Ahead of IPL 2027

The CSR Journal Magazine

Mumbai Indians have initiated a significant revamp of their coaching staff as they prepare for the IPL 2027 season. The franchise has confirmed the departures of Lasith Malinga, Paras Mhambrey, and Carl Hopkinson from their men’s team coaching setup. This announcement follows the recent appointment of Kieron Pollard as the new head coach, replacing Mahela Jayawardene.

Pollard, who previously served as the batting coach, has been elevated to this leadership role as the team seeks to restructure its coaching framework. The franchise disclosed these changes on Thursday, marking the end of the coaching tenures for Malinga, Mhambrey, and Hopkinson. This overhaul reflects the organisation’s intention to refresh its approach ahead of the upcoming season.

Significant Departures from the Coaching Staff

Lasith Malinga has been a pivotal figure in the history of Mumbai Indians. The former Sri Lankan fast bowler played a crucial role in securing four IPL titles for the franchise, as well as their Champions League T20 victory in 2011. After retiring from professional cricket, Malinga returned to the team as a mentor and coach, contributing significantly to the development of its bowling attack over the years.

His departure signifies the conclusion of a long-standing association with the franchise. Paras Mhambrey also enjoyed a lengthy relationship with the Mumbai Indians, having served the franchise from 2010 to 2017 before rejoining in 2024. His experience and expertise were instrumental in nurturing the team’s bowling resources during his time with the side. Mhambrey’s exit adds to the significant changes occurring within the coaching ranks.

Carl Hopkinson joined the Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2025 season after his tenure with the England men’s team. He played a role in enhancing the team’s fielding standards, but his time with the franchise has now come to an end. The departures of these key figures indicate a broader shift in the coaching dynamics of the Mumbai Indians.

Kieron Pollard Takes Over as Head Coach

The appointment of Kieron Pollard as head coach represents a major shift in the leadership structure of the Mumbai Indians. The former West Indies all-rounder has a deep understanding of the franchise, having spent several seasons as the batting coach after retiring from playing in the IPL. Pollard’s new role will see him leading the team into the next season, with expectations for a revitalised approach.

Mahela Jayawardene’s recent departure had already indicated a change in direction for the franchise. During his two tenures as head coach, from 2017 to 2022 and again from 2024 to 2026, he led the team to three IPL titles in 2017, 2019, and 2020. The exits of Malinga, Mhambrey, and Hopkinson suggest that the restructuring at Mumbai Indians is extensive and not limited to the head coach position.

As Pollard assumes his new responsibilities, the Mumbai Indians are expected to finalise their support staff in preparation for IPL 2027. The franchise has yet to announce replacements for the coaches who have departed, leaving room for speculation about the future direction of the team’s coaching strategy.
